Harwick to Contests/Coming Events Show heart in art Artists working in any medium or size are sought to participate in “A Show of Hearts” group show in cel- ebration of Valentine’s Day. Presenters said that you let your creative side show by painting, pasting, building, crafting, stitching, snapping or sculpting any creative variation of the heart that can be dreamed up. Try out haikus At a re- cent poetry meeting Gallery, 25 Main St., Cherry Valley. The event is meant to be a lively winter party, show and sale surrounding creative renditions of the heart, pre- senters said. Artwork can be dropped off at the gallery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 28 and 29; fol- lowing the show, pieces can held by Off the Coast Literary Journal, a poet gave a five-minute introduc- tion to a haiku. The journal is seeking cre- ative haiku entries for its first Off the Coast poetry com- petition. Partici- pants can complete one or both of the following haikus: “Five- minute intro” and “Times are tough, talk cheap.” A haiku is set in three lines, the first of which is one of the two phrases. The six-member ensembles of professional musicians blends traditional and con- temporary styles of klezmer, or Eastern European Yiddish folk music, and typically en- gages the audience in sing- ing and dancing, according to a media release. The group includes founder and clari- netist Robin Seletsky, vi- olinist Julie Signizter, vocalist Ju- lie Jacobs, pianist Kim Paterson, bass- ist Orin Jacobs and drummer Bill Manley. Seek zen at Green Earth The Green Earth, at 4 Mar- ket St. in Oneonta, will offer guided meditation, along with time for questions every Tuesday. An introduction will be at 5:15 p.m., followed by mediation at 5:30 p.m. In Buddhism, meditation means “effortlessly remaining in what is.” This state may be reached by calming and holding the mind, a media release said. There’s no charge. For more information, call 527-5185. Two groups to play at Andes Hotel The Andes Hotel will host the Pre-War Ponies and the Jack Grace Band starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. Daria Grace & Pre-war Po- nies _ with a set of obscure songs from the 1920s and 1930s _ will play from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Yellow Room. Following them in the tavern from 9 p.m. to midnight will be the country musicians from the Jack Grace Band. There’s no cover charge for either show at the hotel, located at 110 Main St. in Andes. Auditions set for play Tri-Town Theatre is looking to cast three female parts in the spring production of “Vanities,” a comedy tell- ing the story of three Texas friends as they go from high school to adulthood. Auditions are from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the basement of the Sidney Public Library at 8 River St. in Sidney. Scripts are available at Glad Tidings, 74 Main St. in Sidney. Performances are set for April 29 and 30, as well as May 1 at the Masonic Temple on Union Street in Sidney. Guava to play Oak, Sake Club Guava Smash, a hip hop/ rock fusion group, will be playing two Oneonta shows this month.
