H Snow days to be made up during second semester Continued from page 4 one of four board members who voted against renovating the former Barrett Memorial Library building on East Main Street and converting it into a history center that would house local artifacts and genealogy records. "At the last school board meeting, there was a motion made to remove Phil Elkins from the library board," Behme said. "It died. And I'd like to ask a question, if you've had a chance to talk with him to see what his reason for voting no for opening the library as a history center." After several seconds of silence, Blake informed the board that she had been unable to make contact with Elkins. Later, the school board, without comment or discussion, appointed Shirley Van Meter to the Pike County Public Library Board, replacing Anisia K. Burkhart, who had submitted her letter of resignation in October, citing "family obligations." "I have enjoyed my time on the library board," wrote Burkhart, whose current term ends Dec. 31, 2014. "I have learned a lot and met a lot of great people. As a person not from Pike County, I am very proud to state I am from Pike County. I am proud of what the library board has accomplished and pray there will be more accomplishments to come." In other action: • The board voted unanimously, without comment or discussion, to approve fuel escalation costs totaling $3,924.90. • The board voted unanimously, without comment or discussion, to accept a $2,500 donation by India- napolis Power & Light to the Pike Central High School athletic department. • The board voted unanimously, without comment or discussion, to approve a list of nine fundraisers submitted by the Precision Machining class, German Club, BPA, FCA and FCCLA at Pike Central High School. • The board voted unanimously, without comment or discussion, to cancel eight outstanding checks as listed in a letter from Pike Central High School Principal Winter Fiscus and extra-curricular activities treasurer Debbie Julian. "These are all at least two years old and must be at least that old before they can be canceled," Blake said. • The board voted unanimously to approve two use of facility requests. One of the requests was for use of the Pike Central High School cafeteria for a fundraiser for Jadyn Ashby, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, but was re-scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, due to inclement weather. "There is a donation to cover the use of facility fee," Blake said. The other request was submitted by Living Faith Church for use of the Old Petersburg Gymnasium during the months of January, February and March. "They would use it from 8:30 to 12:30 and again from 6 to 8 for church services," Blake said. "They've been meeting at the 4-H building, but they have asked if they can rent the OPG for their services." • The board approved, without comment or discussion, the expenditure of $11,574.80 for paper towels and toilet paper. "This is enough quantity – it's payable in January – it's enough quantity to get us through to the end of 2014," Blake said. • After approving four requests for a leave of absence, the board accepted the resignation of Pike Central Middle School seventh grade teacher Karen Hill, effective at the end of the first semester. "She's worked for Pike County School Corporation since the early 1970s," Blake said. "She's decided she's ready to retire." Hill also submitted her resignation as the school's High Ability Coordinator. In addition, the board accepted the resignation of Pike Central Middle School sixth grade teacher Suzanne Warner, effective at the end of the first semester. "She states that she has 35-1/2 years as a teacher with Pike Central Middle School," Blake said. The board also accepted the resignation of Pike County School Corporation deputy treasurer Sharon Gladish, effective Jan. 3, 2015. "She does not state how long she's worked for the corporation but I know it's been many, many years," Blake said. The board approved the appointments of Angie Williams as High Ability Coordinator at Pike Central Middle School, Tammy Williams as volunteer cheerleader sponsor at Otwell Elementary School, Amanda Ashworth as an instructional assistant at Winslow Elementary School and Dennis Mokris as assistant coach for the Pike Central Middle School sixth grade boys' basketball team.
