At Elizabeth Elementary School in Shelby, these second graders began their fi rst art class. Their teacher, Sharon Stahoviak, chal- lenged the students with creative and learning projects. Using art to teach math for example. The class had a great time being back to- gether with friends, as you can tell by their happy faces. The holiday vacation was a fun time, but they do like being back in school. As a reminder, please be careful when driving and obey the rules of the road around school grounds and buses. –M. A. The 11th annual “A Service Of Wor- ship” at Shelby’s Presbyterian Church on New Year’s Eve began at 7 p.m. outside on the church grounds. While the parishioners braved the cold and held luminaries, the traditional sounds of a Scottish bagpiper performed. In Scotland, December 31st is known as Hogmanay. Afterwards, attendees went inside the church to begin ser- vices. Following the service, everyone was invited into Ellis Hall for Scottish country dancing and refreshments. It was a wonderful way for many to begin the New Year. –M. A. Andrews Featured bagpiper Kenneth MacCallum from Travelers Rest, N. C. At the Neal Senior Center’s an- nual New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance this past Friday, we found these partyers ready to celebrate and bring in 2011. The dinner was followed by the music of Frank Love’s Orchestra, and everyone donned their party hats and fa- vors. Commodities Distribution - Marion West And West Warren The United States Department of Agriculture Food labernethy@ Services Division provides food distribution to low-income families once per quarter throughout the year. These deliv- eries are known as “Commodities” and are a welcomed and much appreciated program for our seniors at West Warren Manor and Marion West Housing. The food distribution for December was even better than the previous quarters this year because the income eligibility guidelines had changed. The new monthly gross income figure for eligibility has risen to $1805 per month which allowed for all residents to be able to participate in the commodity distribution this quarter. Even better—the food distribution per household was larger than the past 3 quarters. With the difficult economic climate that affects us all these days, the changes in the food distribution pro- gram are truly a blessing for our seniors.
