Lake Country The FREEMAN THIS MONTH SPORTS NOVEMBER 2013 Inside SECTION B Arrowhead's Kolbow third in state tennis.......3B PREP PROFILE Hirschfeld works way to becoming a Badger Arrowhead senior one of top defensive linemen in state By Todd Hansen Freeman Correspondent TOWN OF MERTON – Billy Hirschfeld didn't dream of playing college or professional football as a little kid. That all changed during his freshman year at Arrowhead High School. "It was like freshman year where I actually started thinking maybe I could play in college if I worked hard," the senior said. "It just kept going and then I realized I have a shot to go play football in college. "I worked out at NX Level with (trainer) Brad Arnett and those guys. They kept telling me I have a lot of potential to go to the next level and that a lot of kids don't. Some people were saying I'd be playing offensive line and not on defense, but I've worked harder and harder over the past few years and I proved them wrong. I'm going to be playing defensive line for the Wisconsin Badgers." The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Hirschfeld, considered one of the top defensive linemen in the state, orally committed to the University of Wisconsin in May, after having numerous other Division 1 offers – Freeman file photo Arrowhead senior Billy Hirschfeld is a four-year varsity player and three-year starter for the Arrowhead High School football team. including those from Michigan State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa State, Pittsburgh and North Carolina State. Staying close to home was a big part of joining the Badgers. "I always want my family to be around and watch me play because they have been a big part of my life and they've always had my back throughout the ups and downs," Hirschfeld said. "I need my parents and my sister coming to my games and cheering me on and supporting me." Third-year Arrowhead coach Greg Malling believes Hirschfeld's best football is yet to come. "I see no reason that he won't keep that drive up," Malling said. "He is just so aggressive. I can't imagine his improvement won't continue. "There was a game earlier this year when I said to one of the other coaches LIVE LIFE WELL School/Sport Arrowhead/Football Coach Greg Malling Class In School/Age Senior/17 Also In My Family Are: my dad, Ronnie Lee, an operations manager for Beaudry Services; my mom, Toni, an assistant accountant for Infratrol Manufacturing; my sister, Anne, 14, a freshman at Arrowhead. The game doesn't always transfer over for people and in college you're in-season all year-round. For a lot of people that's not for them, but that's exactly what he thrives on." Hirschfeld was voted first-team all-state by the Wisconsin Coaches Association last year after helping lead the Warhawks to the WIAA Division 1 state title. This season, Hirschfeld is part of an Arrowhead defense that dominated its way into the playoffs. "I don't know what the word is when he takes up three people at a time," Malling said. "He can just push back a point with his strength better than I have ever seen. It's not even close. "When he's on, he is relentless out there and that's just been huge for us." Ironically, Malling wasn't so sure how special Hirschfeld was three years ago, but that quickly changed. "I didn't see it right away because there were so many big kids and he really didn't stand out in that way," Malling said. "He showed flashes and things. It's just the improvement he's had. What's most impressive about him is that continued growth and development and drive. He's got great drive. All great players have it and that's what he brings. "You could see he had a lot of great physical tools (as a sophomore). It's a testament to Billy that as good as he was as a sophomore and how much better he was as a junior that he has just continued to develop. I think probably the most fun is looking back and seeing that development from one year to the next. He went from a pretty good big kid, to a really good big kid last year, to what he is this year. It's impressive." Hirschfeld is a four-year varsity player and threeyear starter. "This is probably the best defense we've seen in a long time," Hirschfeld said. "Offensively last year we were outstanding and the offense outshined the defense. This year we have to rely on our defense a little bit more."
