Pewaukee woman's college soccer career celebrated Q: By Daniel Mike 2013 COACHES ALL-STATE GIRLS GOLF TEAM DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A PLAYER. Freeman Staff PEWAUKEE – Jodi Huber Janke is honored to have been considered a hall of famer. The Waukesha South High School graduate, who resides in Pewaukee, was inducted Nov. 2 into the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Athletics Hall of Fame – the first soccer player to enter the Hall. She was a member of Whitewater's first NCAA team and was a first-team All-Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection three seasons. She ranks third at Janke Whitewater with 34 career goals, her 84 career points rank third and her 11 assists rank 10th. She talked with The Freeman about the honor. Q: HOW MUCH OF AN HONOR IS IT TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE UWW HALL OF FAME? A: It's quite an honor, especially to be the first soccer player to ever be inducted. Q: DID YOU EVEN KNOW THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY? A: I was aware of the Hall of Fame back in college, seeing it on the hallway walls. I attended one of the banquets as a studentathlete representative, but never really gave it much thought. Q: HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE HONOR? A: – Freeman Staff It came as a big surprise. Joyce Follis from the Hall of Fame committee called me this past spring and told me. A: Soccer has been a part of my life since I was 5. I have an older brother and younger brother, and we all played soccer. I started playing when I was in kindergarten and had to play with boys because there weren't enough girls playing at that time. By the U12 level, I was able to play on an all-girls team. I have always been an offensiveminded player, liked scoring goals and always wanted to win. I credit a lot of my growth at UWW as an overall field player, learning to play defense as well. I still enjoy playing occasionally with the Women's Soccer Club. A: No, it was quite the opposite. My freshman year was the first year in the WWIAC (Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Prior to that, it had been a clublevel team. I knew we would be a young, inexperienced team. I just wanted to continue playing the game I loved so much. Q: WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR GREATEST MEMORIES PLAYING FOR WHITEWATER? A: We had great coaches. I got along very well with Cacho Cordoba and Matt Kuffel. I loved road trip games and the camaraderie with teammates. They became my sorority . Q: WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOWADAYS? A: My husband, Steve, and I have two children, Megan and Kyle, who both play soccer in addition to other sports and activities. I am now the true soccer mom. And it's a good thing for the Warhawks that was the case last month as they nipped Kettle Moraine 3-2 in a showdown between the Nos. 2- and 3-ranked high school boys soccer teams in the state for the Classic 8 Conference title. A penalty kick by Arrowhead junior Steven Peterson only seven minutes and 41 seconds into the second half was the decisive goal and thereafter most of the possession was heavily in the Lasers' favor. But to no avail as Arrowhead (6-0-1) handed Kettle Moraine (6-1) its first league loss of the season to claim its second straight title. The Warhawks have not lost a league game in two seasons, and the Classic 8 title was their eighth overall. "We bent but we didn't break," Arrowhead coach Jeff Staus said. "If they were going to beat us, they were going to have to go through 10 guys." The Lasers' last gasp was a shot in the box by senior Anthony Biasiotta in which Warhawks junior goalie Mitch Sutrick made a diving save with 1:12 remaining. Less than four minutes earlier senior Andy Chmielewski rocketed a 25yard shot off the crossbar. Another long shot by senior Josh Rieker was tipped over the crossbar by Sutrick after Arrowhead had taken its 3-2 lead. 234280001 ComForCare Home Care "Committed to Excellence Since 1996" FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION Hands-on personal care, plus companion care!
