Dopapod rocks Black Oak Tavern Before the band had even taken the stage, the suspense at the Black Oak Tavern was at a fevered pitch. College students and alumni were packed into one of the smaller venues in Oneonta to see Dopapod throw down its mix of Boston Electro-Jazz and Dubstep. Sure, there were lots of other events planned for Hartwick College’s Alumni Weekend, but it seemed that all who had not wedged themselves a good spot inside were stand- ing right by the doors, in a haze of ciga- rette smoke, awaiting the start of the set. As the band approached the stage, the cheers of “D-O-P-A-P-O-D, Huh!” began. Eli Winderman — the band’s talented keyboardist — threw out a soft organ swirl, and the crowd knew it was time for dancing. I have had the pleasure of seeing Dopapod numerous times and you could tell early on that this night would be something special. The 4-piece shook the floor of the Black Oak for two hours as the audience jumped and hollered. Neal Evan, who has taken over full re- sponsibilities as drummer from his humble beginning as the band’s percussionist, laid down some of the heaviest grooves I had heard in a Dopapod set. Also, the new addition of Eli’s MOOG Prodigy synthe- sizer allows for a much more expansive sound, and as the Dubstep beats began, it proved to be the perfect tool for the job. Busting out picture-perfect covers of Primus’ “Groundhog Day” and AC/DC’s “TNT” was just the icing on the cake, and the band managed to play its last few tunes far past the tavern’s curfew. The au- dience wanted more but Eli graciously told them that the band had played quite late and had a long journey back to Boston. As everyone filed out of the Oak, awestruck at the prowess of this relatively young band, I stood outside and took my first breath of the cool autumn air. The night truly had been something special, and I look forward to catching this band when its returns in the spring.
