SEPTEMBER 2013 Page 8A/Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove AROUND THE COMMUNITY Central football team Goodman makes first-team seeks to extend playoff streak all-state for baseball Eighteen senior lettermen return WAUKESHA – Brookfield Central junior infielder Elijah Goodman was selected first-team all-state by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association. Brookfield East Goodman seniors Griffin Lynch and Nick Kanavas received honorable mention as did Brookfield Central junior Riley Richarz. By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – A good start could go a long way for the Lancers. That's what happened last season when the Brookfield Central High School football team eked its way through its first two games – 19-18 over Mukwonago and 21-14 over West Allis Hale in two overtimes. Central then managed to advance to the WIAA playoffs for a third straight time and for the sixth time in the last seven seasons with a 4-3 Greater Metro Conference record. With Central not having to play two of the teams head coach Jamie Meulemans expects to be near the top in the league standings – Marquette and Hamilton – until near the end of the season, the Lancers could definitely use another momentum-building start. But it wasn't expected to be easy as another expected preseason contender, Menomonee Falls, and defending champion Brookfield East are the second and third league opponents on the schedule. Central has 18 returning senior lettermen. Sophomore back Aaron Hammond (5-foot-10, 195) also lettered last year. Four of the senior returnees were accorded allleague honors last season: Running back Demario Harris (6-1, 211) and kicker Steven Knopp (6-0, 172) were second-team all-league picks; and lineman Luke Rassmussen (6-7, 260) and defensive back Terry Wallen (5-11, 175) received honorable mention. Also back are quarterback Riley Richarz (5-10, 170), wide receivers Drew Peterson (6-0, 165) and Jack Knetter (6-0, 170), linebackers Tevin Melton (6-2, 202), Mike Meves (5-10, 165), Justin Pegg (5-10, 165), Jake Giersch (6-4, 264) and TJ Brown (5-11, 165); offensive linemen James Wartman (5-10, 195), Anthony Trapp (6-1, 225) and Josh Gerhard (5-10, 260); defensive lineman Peter Fox (5-10, 188); defensive back Noah Eyrise (6-0, 185) and slot back Andrew Brath (5-10, 160). The returnees give the Lancers a solid base of experience, especially on offense. Richarz is the quarterback; Harris and sophomore Malik Turner (5-6, 157) are running backs; Wallen and senior Gunnar Malensek (5-11, 170) are slotbacks; Wartman and senior Connor Koscienlniak (6-3, 220) are at center; Trapp, sophomore Henry Ritchie (6-3, 250) and junior Michael Horner-Ibler (6-0, 226) ar guards; Rasmussen, senior Dan Faust (6-6, 253) and juniors Mattias Hoehnen (6-2, 205) and Joey Baker (6-2, 201) are tackles; and Knetter, Peterson, senior Matt Liewen (6-2, 175) and sophomore MJ Lucas (6-0, 170) are wide receivers. One player who did not return to the team is senior Elijah Goodman, a second-team all-conference guard who is going to focus on his favorite sport, baseball – a sport for which he dropped a lot of weight to play this summer and became firstteam all-state. Central's Wajda qualifies for U.S.Amateur but misses cut Freeman file photo Running back Demario Harris was second-team allconference last season. "We need some players to step up on the line," Meulemans said. "Having Demario (Harris) and our quarterback (Richarz) returning obviously helps. Demario has been a starter since his sophomore year and now we're kind of a senior-dominated team. "They're smart, too. They have a great gradepoint average, so they can absorb a lot." The defense will include Rasmussen, Giersch, Fox, Gerhard and sophomores Brandon Hughes (5-10, 230) and Joey Koeppelman (6-3, 215), on the line; Melton and junior Mitchell Ahmad (6-3, 207) at linebacker; Pegg, Brown and senior Jake Murray (6-2, 196) at ends and Wallen, Knopp, Eyrise and Meves in the secondary . "We have good strength, they flow to the ball and they practice the way they're going to play - at a high level," Meulemans said. "I'm very happy with their work ethic. We have some young guys who'll have to step up but we have good pieces to the puzzle. "Our goal is to get back into the playoffs and I think it's an achievable goal." Hamilton is Meuleman's pick as conference Buy a Lunch and 2 Beverages, and receive 50% OFF a 2nd Lunch Entree (of equal or lesser value) 233501002 BROOKLINE, Mass. – Eddie Wajda from Brookfield failed to make the cut at the U.S. Amateur golf tournament. Wajda shot 72 the second day, but it wasn't enough to overcome his firstround 78 as he finished at 150. Wajda, representing the Oconomowoc Golf Club, shot a 1under-par 139, one behind medalist Ricky Hearden of Green Bay Keegan . Drugan from Holmen shot a 141 to get the third qualifying spot. Wajda was named co-Player of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin. He shared the honor with Onalaska senior Ben Skogen. Wajda was the lone Waukesha County player voted to the all-state first team. He finished second at the Division 1 state meet, had a season average of 73.28, broke 70 twice and shot 72 or better six times. He finished runner-up for Player of the Year in the Greater Metro Conference. Brookfield East senior Bryan Kendall, the Player of the Year in the Greater Metro Conference who finished 20th at state meet, was voted to the all-state second team, while Catholic Memorial junior Dylan Allen and Brookfield Central senior Eric Schleicher are on the third team.
