SEPTEMBER 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove • Page 5A Blending strong businesses for the road ahead Two custom car shops merge, move to Brookfield location By Chris Flood Freeman Staff Larson said he leads from the business side of things, while Kraus uses his years of experience as an innovator in the automotive industry . Stay Tuned Customs, which Larson bought in October of 2012 as something he believed was a good investment, has traditionally serviced basic model cars like Honda Civics, motorcycles and sometimes boats. Kraus has been in the industry since 1998 and opened Automotive Integration Solutions in October of 2011, which has its niche in the exotic cars like the Ferrari 458 Spider, Mercedes Benz SLS and Aston Martin DB9. Both businessmen see their differing backgrounds as a plus. "It's easy for us to stay out of each other's way in that respect," Larson said. "I'm or she wants a backup camera, and the car doesn't come with a camera, they will install the parts. Focusing on new trends A new radio installed in a BMW Z4 which adds USB, iPod and Bluetooth to the car, along with a subwoofer. more focused on the big picture. Mike is connected to the everyday operations and somebody needs to oversee that and that's not my strength." Kraus said he thinks the two businesses will mesh well, especially because the staffs know each others' specialities and skills. "Having one location just suits the needs and offers a little more under one roof," Kraus said. He said they do anything that involves automotive customizing, from interior to exterior – audio, video, upholstery material. He added that their specialty is integrating parts into cars that were bought from the dealership. For example, if someone buys a car off the lot and he Kraus said the big booming audio systems are still there, but nowhere near what they were in 1998. He said what everyone wants today is to know how they can get their iPhones, iPods or iPads to work with the car. "A unique things we've been doing is integrating iPads into the dash," Kraus said. "Radio sales aren't what they used to be, so now it's about the ways of getting this type of stuff (iPads, iPods) in the vehicle. It's really all about connectivity ." Outside of audio, Kraus said they get the occasional guy who wants to tear a vehicle down and completely redo the whole interior but "the days of lighting and that stuff is all done." "I think people like the look and feel of factory because the car manufacturers are doing such a good job these days, so people don't want to change that stuff too much," Kraus said. Additionally GPS systems, , navigation, Bluetooth and remote starter applications for iPhones are all popular. In terms of car trends, Kraus and Larson said they hope to continue down the avenue of safety-based car technology once things settle , down after the relocation. Much of the shop's business revolves around updating the technology in older high-end cars, like this one where the system included a Bluetooth hands-free system and a subwoofer for added bass. 230341001 WAUKESHA – Two businesses specializing in car customization have recently merged and will open doors in a new location under one roof. Dave Larson, owner and operator of Stay Tuned Customs in Waukesha, and Mike Kraus, owner and operator of Automotive Integration Solutions in Brookfield, have crossed paths frequently over the years in the custom car business. But they recently decided it would suit them both best to move forward together in a business venture – AIS/STC at 4057 N. 128th St. in Brookfield. AIS/STC now has seven employees, all of whom have at least 12 years of experience in the industry Right . now the businesses are operating under two roofs, but everything will move to one location at the beginning this month. Larson and Kraus believe the location will be a good centralized one, providing an opportunity to get customers from Fox Point, Glendale, Mequon and other communities, as well as serve their Waukesha County clientele. They said the shop is essentially move-in ready which , was another deciding factor.
