Personal trainer Joey Huber, owner of Body by Design in Brookfield, has quite a few clients in the 55and-older age group with whom he conducts lowimpact workouts to strengthen the heart and help with longevity . "A lot of times, their joints have taken abuse over the years," Huber said. "We do a lot of low-impact stuff, but then depending on their goals, higher intensity to , strengthen their heart and help with longevity but we , have to be safe at the same time." Low impact and perpetual motion are the keys to a good workout. People need their joints to stay fluid, but not abused. For example, instead of jumping jacks, Huber may have clients lift their knees up in place while moving their arms over their head. It involves the same movement, but eliminates the impact on the joints. Huber said a big part of the training for this age group is beginning with dynamic warm-ups, which mimic the moves they will do later in their workout. For example, a client may walk forward and kick his legs as high as he can to stretch the hamstrings before he later does a full stretch to reach down and touch his toes. Other popular exercises are lunges and squats, because they are safe, functional and effective. Huber also said the trainer can con- Hello, Brookfield & Elm Grove! "What we like to do is use all exercises that can be regressed," he said. "If they can't do the original form of it, instead of saying, 'Oh well, you can't do this one,' we find a way to regress it." Many popular exercises at the moment employ the use of battle ropes. Battle ropes are long ropes, about two inches in thickness. A person would hold a rope in each hand and do different exercises with them for aerobic activity as well as , strengthening.
