Thomas Jefferson called the victory of American patriots over British Major Patrick Ferguson's army at Kings Mountain in Oct. 1780, the battle "that turned the tide of success in the Revolutionary War." During the Revolutionary War march, the soldiers came from southwest Virginia, eastern Tennessee, the piedmont of North and South Carolina, and as far away as Georgia, all joining to form an army that defeated Ferguson and his forces at Kings Mountain. The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, established by Congress in 1980, commemorates the campaign that led to the Battle of Kings Mountain. Each year in the fall members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association lead a commemorative march with public events to honor the patriot army and their story. Rutherford County Historian Chivous Bradley announced the programs for school students in Rutherford County on Oct. 4 at Gilbert Town outside of Rutherfordton, where the Overmountain spent a night enroute to the Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War. All along the route, OVTA marches identify the places where soldiers marched. On Tuesday evening from 4:30 at 5:30pm there will be a "Walk With History" at Kiwanis Park in Rutherfordton. The event is in collaboration with the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. At approximately 6pm there will be music and storytelling afterwards. On Wednesday morning, the re-enactors will have breakfast at 7am at the Boy Scout Hut in Rutherfordton provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution. From there they will meet at Gilbert Town for the OVTA programs. At 6pm that evening there will be a public program at Grays Chapel. Breakfast follows on Oct. 5 at Pleasant Hill and at 9am. Polk County Schools will listen to programs at Gray's Chapel/Alexander's Ford.
