The Special Olympics North Carolina equestrian games were held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the equestrian athletes from across the state, clients from Rutherford Life Services were at TIEC during the weekend to watch the competition, play games and enjoy food. "We had such an amazing weekend of sport and celebration, as our top Special Olympics NC equestrian athletes from all over the state joined us at Tryon International Equestrian Center & Resort," said Molly Gilbert Oakman, director of equestrian operations at TIEC. The State games were held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at TIEC. "So wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new friends. We shared laughs, tears, and memories that will last a lifetime," she said. Oakman said it was an honor to be with her long time friend, Billy Callahan of Rutherfordton, who assisted in carrying the Special Olympics torch in the opening ceremonies. "Billy and I go way back to the Camp Harmony days with Julie Hodge and Rutherford County SO with Zana Whitmire," Oakman said. Among volunteers were students from Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy as they volunteered in a number of ways. "The world is a better place because of Special Olympics and the athletes, parents, staff, and volunteers. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives," Oakman added. Rutherford County residents have the opportunity to check out blood pressure monitor kits from any of the libraries in the Foothills Library Consortium (Rutherford County, Haynes, Mountains Branch, Mooneyham, Norris, and Spindale). The kits can be checked out for two weeks at a time, just like a book or DVD. Kits contain a monitor, cuff, AC adapter, instruction booklet, and a laminated blood pressure guide. It also includes a blood pressure log that people can keep even after the kit has been returned, to maintain personal records. Coming this week: oversized cuffs for larger arms.
