After having the last Passover meal with his disciples, he began to bear the emotional weight of bearing the sins of mankind. It was then that he retreated, with three of his disciples, to the Garden of Gethsemane for a season of prayer. All of the devil's power was being unleashed on him and he needed the Father's strength. According to the book of Luke, God sent an angel to help him in his time of greatest need. We clearly see the humanity of Jesus as he prayerfully labored in the garden. His immense sorrow and grief caused him to sweat drops of blood. If it were not for the intercession of God, he may have died prematurely. Understanding the full measure of God's wrath that was to be poured upon him and the ultimate separation of his eternal bond with the trinity, he began to pray, "If there be any other way, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless not my will, but thy will be done." According to Hebrews chapter fi ve, he surrendered to God's desire and became obedient unto death. If there was not a Gethsemane, there would never have been a Calvary. We all face situations in our life that are unpleasant. It is during those times that we are tempted to go our own way and turn from God's plan. In those dark hours of pain and loneliness, we must turn to God as Jesus did and pray, "Not my will, but thy will be done." It is only when we submit to God's will that his enabling grace will be evident in our life. He will give us the strength to endure life's hardships.
