Throwing Bones is a 501(c)3 nonprofi t organization whose mission is to encourage blood cancer patients to stay healthy and active through treatment. Throwing Bones' programs include the Cancer Active Assessment series, Cancer Active Education, and the Cancer Active Coaching Network. All funds raised through the 2023 Not-A-Sprint Weekend will be used to encourage those affected by cancer to stay healthy and active through treatment, and to support the Kirk Wilkerson Cancer Heroes memorial contribution to East High School Athletics, where Forest City native Kirk Wilkerson coached the East High School Football team was an example to the team, school and county. The event includes an endurance race, a golf tournament, a silent auction and a special dinner on Saturday evening. Runners, golfers, and friends are invited to join us for a dinner celebrating all things Not-A-Sprint on Saturday night, Sept. 2 at 6:30pm. The dinner will be held at 138 Park Square Circle, Forest City. The golf tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Meadowbrook Golf Club, Rutherfordton. Shotgun start is at 10am and the cost includes a box lunch. After registering, please email player's name(s) and team name to cindy@ throwing-bones.org. Not-a-Sprint Endurance Run on Sunday, Sept. 3, can be a 12 hour, 6 hour and 3 hour endurance race. The race will be a 4.5 mile out and back course beginning at POPS and following the Thermal Belt Rail Trail North to Mill Town Brewing Company in Spindale, and then back to POPS. There will be one aid station at Mill Town Brewing, and one self-serve aid/H2O station in the middle of the course. There is a 95 feet of elevation over the entire course and it is paved the entire way. There will be few road crossings. Volunteers will be on hand to direct runners where necessary, but runners need to be aware of their surroundings at these intersections. The course is partially to completely shaded on about 35 percent of the course. The fi rst runners will leave the POPS at 6am. The fi rst wave will run 12 hours from 6am to 6pm. The second wave will run 6 hours from 6:30am to 12:30am. The third wave will run 3 hours from 7am to 10am. There will be food, water and electrolytes available at every aid station, and various food choices throughout the day. Runners should also plan on bringing their own supplies to set up near the start/fi nish. Space will be provided for tables, chairs and tents for runners and their crew. There will be porta potties or public restrooms at miles 0, 4.5, 9, 13.5 and so on. Half laps will be counted since there will be timing mats at both ends. Article Provided By: Jean Gordon Second annual Not-a-Sprint weekend in memory of Kirk Wilkerson The Earl Scruggs Music Festival (ESMF) will be hosted at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring from Friday, September 1 through Sunday, September 3. There are three stages: The Flint Hill Stage presented by WLOS (main stage), The Foggy Mountain Stage presented by Lakeside Mills, The Legends Workshop Stage presented by Gibson Gives. ESMF will include a family area with children's activities. Patrons are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in picking at the IBMA Jammin' Area: Earl's Pickin' Pavilion. All instrument cases will be subject to search at the festival gate. Prior to the Friday night music, there will be free events on Thursday night including live music by Reedy River String Band and Pretty Little Goat at the Foggy Mountain Stage sponsored by Lakeside Mills. There will be pickleball social and horse jumping demonstrations, restaurants and shopping available.
