Wake the World, a non-profit organization that offers recreational water sports events for disabled or disadvantaged children or adults, will once again hold an open day of skiing and water tubing at Moss Lake at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023. "This event is for kids and adults who are not usually able to water ski because of a disability," says organizer Chuck Hoyle. Hoyle is paralyzed from the waist down and is an avid adaptive skier. "Adaptive water skiing has been a wonderful addition to my life, and I want to share it with as many folks as we can," says Hoyle. "We are offering this event for the disabled to try something they may have never tried before. We also encourage those who have joined us in previous years to come back and enjoy participat- ing again." Hoyle first brought Wake the World to Cleveland County in 2018 and 2019 but was prevent- ed from holding it in 2020 due to COVID. In 2021 the event was revived and now it will return for a fifth time at Moss Lake. "We were so glad to be able to bring back this event to Cleveland County these past couple of years," says Hoyle. "We have had amazing turnouts, and we are expecting even more participants this year. We are really in need of volunteers to help the skiers in the water." Wake the World uses adap- tive skiing equipment to allow participants to enjoy skiing with support from side skiers. Side skiers help the participants into the water and to get up on the skis, says Hoyle. "Volunteers are needed for these duties and to assist with logis- tics on the dock." Participant spaces are limited, so those interested are asked to call Hoyle at 704-734-1050 as soon as possible. Volunteers can also call this number to sign up to help.
