The pet supply store has not missed a beat overcoming a few hick-ups along the way after a fi re broke out in the store in 2020. That along with the global pandemic caused some tough times for about three years as the pandemic closed in-store shopping. When shoppers couldn't come into the store, drive-through curbside shopping was available in a new building constructed while the fi re damaged building was under renovation. Curbside shopping is during the store's business hours. In spite of the downturns, the store co-owners Chris Nelson-Vandette and David Nelson-Vandette are proud to be the winners of the 2022 Most Resilient pet supply store in the country. That recognition of Rutherford Pet Supply will be featured in the multimedia platform's magazine Pet Product News in July, said Chris. A media team was at Rutherford Pet Supply recently interviewing owners and staff for the story. Pet Product News is the leading source for the latest pet industry news, the newest products and trends and expert business solutions for independent pet retailers. It's the most-read and most-trusted trade publication among business owners and decision makers. Pet Product News delivers breaking- news e-newsletters as well as in-depth news in print and online, and has the largest social media audience among industry publications. For the pet supply owners, the recognition simply means the Rutherford Pet Supply will keep going no matter what bumps are in the road ahead in order to meet the pet needs of people in Rutherford County and across the region. The supply store still has supplies for dogs, cats, birds, small animals and reptiles. When they get back into the revamped store, they will have fi sh again. "Right now we just don't have the space," Chris said. The store owners say they have "dog food that keeps tails wagging and cat food that keeps cats purring." They also advertise their good prices for the best and most healthy food for all pets. Store manager Matthew Huntley said "we gratefully appreciate the support of all the local customers throughout the three years and we look forward to creating another shopping experience worthy of its name." The pet supply store also has its own groomer who proclaims she likes "dogs and cats" more than she does people and takes great care and pride in the grooming. Chris explains the importance of animals' diet to their overall health and wellness. "We want to keep our pets alive, healthy and happy," he said. "Our philosophy is to keep our pets alive without costing a lot of money," he added. At Rutherford Pet Supply, the animal nutrition counseling aims to empower animal lovers to provide their animals with a high-quality diet through each phase of life. Proper diet can help improve many health-related problems. The business website reads, "Nutritional demands for pups and kitties vary as a result of many aspects such as life stage, size, breed, physical activity levels, overall health, and more, consequently, a one-size-fi ts-all solution to nutrition will not do the job. Our team can counsel you on which types of foods will be appropriate according to your animal's necessities, quantity to feed, and what to seek out on pet food labels." The store fi rst opened in Forest City in 2009 and after a merger and new store in Spindale the business now offers more opportunities for pet owners, including animal rescue. Right now pets are rescued from the Lee Shore Rescue facility on location and once the renovations are completed, the rescue facility will offer larger space with more opportunities to keep more pets for rescue. They already partner with animal rescue groups in Rutherford and Polk counties. For more info about adopting the pets, visit online or call 828-248- 2336.
