SPRING SPRING SPECIAL SPECIAL IT'S EASIER TO BUILD BOYS AND GIRLS THAN TO MEND MEN AND WOMEN POSITIVE GOALS, HARD WORK AND PATIENCE MAY BE BITTER BUT ITS' FRUIT IS SWEET BUILDING POSITIVE MIND • BODY • SPIRIT SINCE 1976 HIGH ACHIEVERS ARE NOT BORN -THEY ARE MADE On May 17, 1976 I started with four students in a small room across from the courthouse in Rutherfordton. The fi rst 19 years I worked another job, 50-60 hours a week that I truly enjoyed at a local plant, while at the same time teaching 25 to 30 hours each week of the year of Karate. I also traveled and competed, and still spent time at home with my family burning the candle at both ends. In 1978 I moved the school to Forest City and since 1991 I have had my facility here on West Main Street. God allows us to go through tests and trials in life that can strengthen or break us in our faith and bring one to his knees. Through my 47 years of teaching, I feel like I've had a double dose of trials and tests. I think of the great leaders and warriors in the Bible, how each was broken down and humbled through the falls and trials of life or things and loved ones were taken away to get their attention for the direction in life God wanted them to go and the people they would lead. During the 1980s I had some great material losses, one being my school — then on Thomas Street — was completely destroyed by fi re with no insurance or fi nancial backing. Many people said I should quit and throw in the towel and go to other things in life. I am glad I listened to the small voice in my heart that told me not to give up, that my journey had only begun and many lives were yet to cross my path in life. And one day at a time, I started building back again. Then during the mid 90s I lost seven loved ones very close to me, three being instructors and one being my Dad. Again that inner voice told me to never give up. (So true that tough times never last, but tough people do). In the 47 years of this journey, I've been blessed by many angels that God has sent to me through the heart and spirit of special people I've met. Well, after years of pity and dragging my feet and baggage during the 80s, I gave it all over to the Lord in September of 1991. Now stronger in mind, body and spirit, my year's time and training and God as my inner strength, I could go on. I had won three world titles and promoters were calling me to fi ght all over the country and several times overseas. For several years, I was among the top 10 fi ghters in the nation, but as the Bible says these worldly things last only a season. The belts now hang in the school along with some nice memories. In Isaiah 40:8— "The grass withers, and the fl owers fade, but the Word of God stands forever." I've said all that to say this: our time is so short in this life. I hope you're taking part in Godly things that are positive for the mind, body and spirit, and not worldly things that only pull you down and away from the good. Nothing against sports and other activities, but nothing comes close to a true program that builds confi dence, respect and setting positive goals in life like this program can do for all ages if you never give up. Well, as they say, this is only the tip of the iceberg that I had time and room to share. Everyone has a story to tell and could write a book about their own life. In my 47 years of this, I've learned people don't care how much you've done or things you've won or degrees or diplomas you have, they want to know how much you care. Each and every student is special and loved here in their own way. I look forward to meeting you. Come by or give us a call to be a part of this awesome program.
