People going through a tragedy will agree that the pace of life immediately changes. While the world around them continues to go on, every decision and interaction in a hurting person's life seems to go in slow motion. We no longer have the luxury of thinking about future events. Life now is encapsulated into a minute-by-minute existence. The moment we are shocked by a catastrophic loss, we go into survival mode. It could be news of a life-threatening accident, a terminal diagnosis, a severed relationship or some other traumatic event, but when it happens our world comes to a screeching halt. Trying to process mentally and emotionally what is happening will cause us to fi xate on our present state. We will be tempted to retreat from our present obligations. We no longer have the fortitude to handle normal activities. All we want to do is to run and hide. Instead of viewing life as a daily experience, we begin to navigate moment by moment. The challenge we face is just getting through the next minute. That is all we have the strength to accomplish. Going through deep sorrow and grief changes life's priorities. Those things we considered important just a few minutes ago are no longer of any value. During a trying time, we must learn to draw closer to God. We will learn that His grace is suffi cient for each diffi cult moment. The Psalmist proclaimed, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1) He will be there for each step of our grief journey.
