Earlier in the day, he had visited Keeter Stadium and had lunch at Le- Grand Center. Troiola was elected na- tional commander of the nation's largest veterans' organization on September 1, 2022 in Milwaukee during The American Legion's 103rd na- tional convention. He serves one year and spends 330 days on the road visiting Posts in all 50 states and abroad. His theme as national commander is "V.E.T.S., Veterans, Educa- tion, Teamwork and Sponsor." He spoke to Post 82 mem- bers and guests regarding various topics, including the importance of youth programs, needs of active-duty personnel, veteran's initiatives, and a new mental health program started by American Legion Depart- ment of Wisconsin, called Be The One. The program became so popular it has now been em- braced by the organization na- tionally. Be The One's goal is to destigmatize asking for mental health support, provide peer- to-peer support and resources, and educate everyone on how they can Be the One. The No. 1 issue facing the veteran community is suicide, according to the National Veteran Sui- cide Preven- tion Annual Report. It is e s t i m a t e d that between 17 and 22 veterans or servicemem- bers take their lives each day. That's more than 6,000 annu- ally. The rate of suicide for veterans is more than 50% higher than that of n o n - v e t e r a n adults. As the Global War on Terrorism contin- ues, there will be more veterans facing mental- health issues such as post- traumatic stress disorder. " T h e b i g - gest purpose of Be The One," Troiola said in a subsequent interview, "is to remove the stigma. Those who are at risk don't want to be labeled because it could result in them losing their firearms, secu- rity clearances, or their families. That is why we chose to visit smaller posts, because a veteran talking to a veteran is different than a non- veteran talking to a veteran because non-veterans don't understand us. There is more camaraderie between veterans, and we can build trusted rela- tionships. The main purpose is to visit veterans and get this in- formation in their hands." He went on, "Be The One was chosen as the official char- ity of Indy Car Racing. It is a big deal, because that is our demo- graphic. The trailer is staffed by Veterans Service Officers who know how to talk to veterans. And they've taught us how to do that, too.
