Page 4 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 www.rutherfordweekly.com Thursday, March 2-March 8, 2023 Chase Middle School will soon receive new musical instruments, thanks to The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, a national organization supporting music education in schools. With many school music programs across the country losing vital funding, the foundation helps under- served schools with minimal budgets by donating new instruments, often replacing some that are more than 30 years old. An application for support was submitted by Chase Middle School and the foundation found their program to be a worthwhile investment, allowing more students to be able to play and experience the benefi ts of music education. Principal Elizabeth Ellis says, "We are so proud of our music program and the growth that we have seen over the past two years. These instruments are going to be a huge help to our band program in reaching the goals our directors have set for the future. I cannot wait to hear these new instruments in concert at the school soon!" "We believe in supporting schools that recognize the importance of music education for their students," said Felice Mancini, President and CEO of The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. "To give more kids the experience of making music in school is more important than ever and giving teachers quality instruments makes a huge difference. The benefi ts are tremendous." The music programs at Chase Middle School currently include 40 percent of the total school population. The bands are under the direction of Mr. Michael Henderson and Mr. Ryan Kisner. The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation was inspired by the acclaimed motion picture Mr. Holland's Opus, the story of the profound effect a dedicated music teacher had on generations of students. The fi lm's composer, Michael Kamen, started the foundation in 1996 as his commitment to the future of music education. The Foundation keeps music alive in our schools by donating musical instruments to under- funded music programs, and vital support services to school districts nationwide, giving economically- disadvantaged youth access to the many benefi ts of music education, leading them to success in school, and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music. Hundreds of thousands of students across the country have benefi ted. NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS. Chase Middle students to receive musical instruments; awarded grant from National Foundation Article Provided By: Jean Gordon In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, restaurant, school and work closures were integral components of mitigation plans designed to prevent the virus from spreading. That resulted in much fewer cars on the road. Many things have changed since then, and life has gradually returned to pre-pandemic conditions. That return to normalcy has been marked by a return to the workplace. The United States Census Bureau says the average person commutes just over 27 minutes each way when traveling solo by car. Those times were slashed when only essential personnel were commuting during the height of the pandemic. Census data paints a picture of shorter commute times now. Data indicates that, in 2019, there were nearly nine million workers who were doing their jobs outside of a centralized workplace. In 2021, that part of the workforce increased to about 27.6 million workers, resulting in roughly 18.6 million fewer commuters across the U.S. Census surveys indicate round-trip commute times dropped by around 7 percent in 2021 from 2019, equalling about 4 minutes saved on a round-trip commute each day. Only time will tell if commutes will continue to decrease or if a return to the offi ce from remote working will once again increase commute times. Did you know?
