ListentoLife.org LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette It seems to me that a lot of the conversations I listen to are more about what people don't like, what they don't have, what they don't agree with, etc., than about what they do like, what they do have, what they agree with and just generally what they're thankful for. Focusing on these negatives causes your mind and spirit to attract more of them. When you focus on the positives, you discover more of them in your life. So today, focus for a minute on what you're thankful for. I'm thankful today for: My wife and daughters who love me as I am, good mood or when I'm Senor Crank Pants, as my oldest daughter refers to me at times. My parents with whom I'm spending most of this week and their loving sacrifi ces and investments in me when I was young. My work team who give of themselves every single day to achieve outstanding results for our clients and customers who want to Work and Live Positive. And I'm thankful to share this story with you today. Thanks for listening to life with me! What are you thankful for today? Distractions have never been harder to resist. Ac- cording to Deloitte's "2022 Connectivity and Mobile Trends Survey" (third edi- tion), the average house- hold in the United States now has a total of 22 con- nected devices. Things are a little less connected in Canada, where a J.D. Power survey of televi- sion service subscribers found that the average household has about 10 devices. The prevalence and ac- cessibility of devices can make it diffi cult to focus, but tablets, smartphones and other technologies are not the only culprits that can compromise the ability to concentrate. Harvard Medical School notes that underlying medical conditions, the side effects of medication and excessive alcohol consumption can each make it harder to focus. That's a signifi cant detri- ment, as an ability to fo- cus can help individuals be more effi cient and per- form better at work and in school. Each individual is differ- ent, so efforts to improve focus might require a little trial and error until a per- son fi nds what works for them. In the meantime, the following are some ef- fective strategies that can help people sharpen their focus and reap all the re- wards that a heightened ability to concentrate has to offer. • Turn notifi cations off. Notifi cations are a bigger distraction than people may realize. A 2015 study from researchers at Flori- da State University found that simply hearing the ping of a notifi cation was as distracting as taking a phone call. Individuals may fi nd the idea of an- swering as little as 20 or more phone calls per day unrealistic, but research- ers have found that the average smartphone user receives around 80 push notifi cations per day. Such constant infl ow of notifi - cations is detrimental to smartphone users' ability to focus. Turning notifi ca- tions off while in school or during the workday can help people avoid this seemingly endless stream of distractions, thus improving focus. • Establish a distrac- tion-free workspace. A survey from McKinsey & Company found that, af- ter the acute phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, 58 percent of employed respondents have the op- tion to work from home for all or part of the week. Remote working may be more convenient, but it also can compromise workers' focus in ways that are unique to working from home. For example, professionals' children cannot stroll into their of- fi ces when they aren't working from home, nor are distractions like tele- vision within arm's length in a traditional offi ce set- ting. Professionals who are fi nding it hard to focus when working from home can do more to make their home offi ces distraction- free. Make your home a television-free zone dur- ing traditional working hours and remove a tele- vision or non-work tablet from your offi ce so you aren't tempted to watch a show or a sporting event when you're supposed to be working. • Adopt a healthier life- style. The experts at Har- vard Medical School note that many aspects of a healthy lifestyle can help people focus better. Re- searchers have discov- ered a direct link between exercise and a person's ability to pay attention, noting that exercise in- creases the availability of brain chemicals that reduce stress and im- prove sleep, among other things. Less stress and a good night's rest can make it easier to focus. An ability to focus pays myriad dividends. Indi- viduals can try various strategies to improve their concentration skills and reap the rewards that such improvement pro- vides.
