The British actress, writer, singer and songwriter has adapted her one-woman play "Superhoe" – which cast her as an aspiring vocalist who finds catching a break highly elusive – into a BBC-originated series titled "Mood," which has its American premiere Sunday, Nov. 6, on BBC America and AMC+. (The second of the six episodes also will be available to stream that day on AMC+, which then will continue to offer each of the remaining chapters a week earlier.) As various relationships hit the skids, Sasha (Lecky) tries to turn her energy toward launching a music career, which proves difficult. While staying with drug dealer Saleem (Mohamed Dalmar), she has a chance encounter with influencer Carly (Lara Peake) that gives her fresh input ... but also generates more complications for her, which she laments partially through songs performed by Lecky. Lecky says that her own professional experience inspired Sasha's, "trying any way you can to get your talent out there. I was writing scripts and sending them to people unsolicited, and performing open mics or doing these open-access forums as an actor. "I got lucky in that I found some really amazing, inspirational mentors that really helped me at the beginning of my career and kind of steered me into a path. I ended up going to drama school in the U.K., and that was really the first time I was noticed and able to get an agent." Since "Superhoe" featured Lecky solely, she admits it wasn't easy to relinquish some of the characters to other performers for "Mood." She reflects, "Carly is the kind of antithesis in a weird way to Sasha, and she's a lot of fun, bouncing around. Lara Peake does an amazing job. It was always hard to give them over, but I feel like we've just got the best cast. We really were like, 'Is this the right person?' The BBC had seen the stage show, so I feel we had a clear idea of what we were kind of hoping for." With the "Mood" plot points and the songs informing each other, Lecky says the story came first in most cases. "It's a close call," she maintains. "After I flesh out the story, I can kind of find these pockets or moments that I feel like the best way to really get under the skin of a scene is through a song. Then, once I write the song and I'm in the studio, something might come out in the song lyrically that I want to go and sort of embed a bit more into the story."
