November 6 - 12, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Duff Goldman turns thespian in discovery+'s 'A Gingerbread Christmas' Duff Goldman is not only an "Ace of Cakes," but it turns out he's a good guy to have around in a pinch, too. That was never more apparent than during the filming of the discovery+ telepic "A Gingerbread Christmas" this past spring in Montreal, when a repair was needed to a gingerbread house after a camera person had bumped into it and Goldman came to the rescue. "It was late, it was already midnight," he recalls. "The artist who made all (the gingerbread houses) was already gone and so they're like, 'Oh my God! What are we going to do?' And I was like, 'We're in a hotel, right?' And they were like, 'Yeah.' And I was like, 'You guys, just get me some egg whites and some powdered sugar and some parchment paper and I can fix it.' "And so, I actually had to make royal icing and fix one of the gingerbread houses in between takes ... . You know, it actually was nice because all the actors were like, 'Oh yeah, that's what you do. OK, cool.' " In the movie, which begins streaming Friday, Nov. 11, Goldman has a co-starring role as Mark Clemmons, a food celebrity and judge presiding over a gingerbread house competition that is the backdrop for potential romance between a contestant (Tiya Sircar, "The Good Place"), a New York architect helping out at her dad's failing bakery, and a local contractor (Marc Bendavid, "Good Witch") helping to spruce up the place. For Goldman, this isn't his first film role. He had a bit part as a clown in the 2010 comedy "Below the Beltway" and another small part that same year in the romantic comedy "You Again" that wound up on the cutting room floor. He's also done voice work in the TV series "King of the Hill" and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." And then, of course, there are all his baking series efforts including "Ace of Cakes," "Kids Baking Championship," "Buddy vs. Duff " and "Holiday Baking Championship," which by the way has its season premiere Monday, Nov. 7, on Food Network and discovery+. Meanwhile, Goldman has enjoyed his acting experiences and would like to do more, though maybe not as a baker, lest he be typecast. "Maybe next time I could be like I'd like to play like a car mechanic or like the guy running the falafel cart or something," he says. "I think I could pull that off."
