(ORIGINAL) 10 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • October 30 - November 5, 2022 BEST JAMES MASON MOVIES "Odd Man Out" (1947) Mason made a big mark in director Carol Reed's drama of an Irish rebellion leader wounded and on the run after a robbery. "The Desert Fox" (1951) Mason gives an excellent interpretation of World War II General Erwin Rommel, a role he reprised two years later in "The Desert Rats." This film is included in the opening night of Turner Classic Movies' "Star of the Month" tribute to Mason on Thursday, Nov. 3. "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1952) Stewart Granger has the principal role – actually, roles, since he plays lookalikes – but Mason also is prominent as a scheming rival for power over a country. "Julius Caesar" (1953) Mason plays Brutus to Louis Calhern's titled character and Marlon Brando's Mark Antony in this star- packed take on Shakespeare's play. "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954) Mason makes a fabulous Captain Nemo in this superb, Walt Disney-produced adaptation of Jules Verne's undersea story. "A Star Is Born" (1954) In one of the several tellings of the classic Hollywood tale, Mason plays Norman Maine, an actor whose popularity slides as his overnight-sensation wife's (Judy Garland) rises. "Bigger Than Life" (1956) Mason is chilling in this addiction drama about a seriously ill teacher who participates in an experiment. "Island in the Sun" (1957) Race and politics cause tension on a Caribbean island for various people, including the characters played by Mason and Harry Belafonte. "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1959) Mason plays the professor who leads the expedition to – well, check the title again – in this imaginative retelling of the classic Jules Verne tale. "North by Northwest" (1959) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, a wonderfully smooth and unsettling Mason plays a villain who makes things tough for an advertising man (Cary Grant) he mistakes for a spy. "Lolita" (1962) Stanley Kubrick's film of the controversial Vladimir Nabokov novel casts Mason as a college professor captivated by the vastly younger title character (Sue Lyon). "The Blue Max" (1965) Mason plays a World War I general whose wife (Ursula Andress) becomes involved with a pilot (George Peppard) in this involving adventure- drama. "Georgy Girl" (1966) Lynn Redgrave has the title role in this internationally popular comedy-drama, the would-be mistress of an older man (Mason). "The Last of Sheila" (1973) The commercial director played by Mason is one of several acquaintances drawn into a bizarre game by their vengeance-minded host (James Coburn). "Heaven Can Wait" (1978) As Mr. Jordan, a human representation of the Deity, Mason welcomes a football quarterback (Warren Beatty) to the afterlife prematurely. "Odd Man Out" BY JAY BOBBIN
