October 30 - November 5, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE 'Tiffy Cooks' and seeks to prove that you can, too Tiffy Chen is all about street food. For her, the fare to be had from food trucks and street vendors represents simple, affordable dishes at their best, food made from the best ingredients by home cooks who are passionate about what they do. It also serves as the inspiration for the recipes the Vancouver-based content creator and blogger creates for her "Tiffy Cooks" videos on YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest and Instagram. "It's like eating your family's and friends' best home recipes," Chen says of street food. "It kind of feels like a little hidden secret even though a lot of these are like super, super popular stalls but it feels like you really found like a gem. They usually do one to two things really, really, really well. Like they do them a lot of times and that's usually their passion, is that one to two dishes and they really perfect it." In her videos, the key is simplicity and accessibility as the Taiwan-born and -raised Chen prepares mainly Asian dishes ranging from Mongolian beef, garlic steak and chicken dumplings to cold sesame noodles, chewy taro balls and green onion pancakes, recipes that she also posts on her blog. And the best part is they can be done with easy-to- find ingredients, a trick she learned at college when authentic ingredients were scarce. "You can really customize it at home the way you like it and based on your dietary restrictions," she says. "So I share like tons of gluten-free recipes. ... I can veganize a dish. ... You know, it might not be the most authentic way to make it because you may need certain ingredients but just customizing and having fun with it, I think, that's really what I believe when it comes to home cooking and cooking in general." Chen's story is pretty extraordinary. Like a lot of people, she started really getting into cooking during the pandemic and made a video for family and friends. The morning after she posted it, she woke up to find it had 200,000 views, which spurred her on to do even more. Soon she had a bonafide following and she consequently quit her corporate job to become a full-time content creator. Now she makes about three videos a week and wants to help others to follow in her path. "On my blog, I share not only recipes but I also share a lot of tips and tricks on how to actually become a food blogger," she says. "I share a lot of behind-the-scenes ... I share all my income reports there. I share how I got started and tricks and tips that people can kind of go look at if they're also interested in getting started."
