Three years later, in 1985, the Cleveland County Chamber joined the program and presented the county's fi rst Athena Award to Pat Elli- son, formerly of Shelby. The late Beverly Shuford, visionary founder of Person- nel Services Unlimited, Inc., was the second recipient. To pay tribute to his mother's outstanding leadership, Tim Blackwell, president of the fi rm, sponsored this year's Athena Award. "It was a proud moment for the whole family when our mother won this prestigious award," Blackwell said. "She won the award for her cour- age in starting our staffi ng company, but even more so for all her work with commu- nity boards and agencies." A member of the Abuse Prevention Council board on which Ms. Shuford served says, "Beverly's devotion to her work carried over into her devotion to the community. She was a hard worker – she was very well-directed and accomplished what she started. Her legacy lives on." Peggy Paksoy, former exec- utive director of the Chamber and also an Athena Award re- cipient, added, "Beverly start- ed a staffi ng business that fi lled a pressing need, and her business blossomed and grew. The Athena Award has recognized some truly out- standing women like Beverly who have provided worth- while service to the commu- nity." According to Christine Cribb, current Chamber ex- ecutive director, the Cham- ber solicited nominees who have achieved excellence in their business or profession, served the community mean- ingfully, and actively assisted women to achieve their lead- ership potential. Katie Wilson Borders, MD, of Shelby has been selected the Athena Leadership Award recipient for 2021. Her award was presented at the Cham- ber's annual awards evening in June. Dr. Borders specializes in OB/GYN and is also the med- ical director of her practice, Atrium Health Women's Care Shelby OB/GYN. She serves as Assistant Specialty Medi- cal Director for the Women's Service Line at Atrium Health. A Shelby native, she grad- uated from NC State Univer- sity, where she was a Park Scholar, and received her medical degree and complet- ed her residency at the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "I was really lucky to grow up in Cleveland County," Dr. Borders says, "and to be able to continue and complete my education in North Carolina." When Dr. Borders was told she was the 2021 recipient of the Athena Leadership Award, she expressed sur- prise, adding, "I don't think I'm doing anything special – just doing the right thing. Doing the right thing is how I look at making decisions. In my family, I have had some really good models for ser- vice." In recommending Dr. Bor- ders for this award, associ- ates spoke of her ability to lead within the medical com- munity by teaching new skills and fi nding ways to improve patient care. Dr. Borders adds, "It is tru- ly an honor to come back to Cleveland County and use my education and skills to serve people, to do what I can to make things better for everyone." Dr. Mike Keeley of Shelby Women's Care wrote in sup- port of her nomination, "As a physician she has good inter- personal skills, great clinical knowledge and is a skilled surgeon. She knows how to care for the individual women under her care, but the amaz- ing thing is she looks beyond her individual practice. She looks at the way care is de- livered to other women in our community, analyzes it, and then helps improve the care these women receive." A recognized advocate for women's health services and for improving access to medical care, Dr. Borders collaborates with the Cleve- land County Public Health Center, Children's Homes of Cleveland County, and Hos- pice Cleveland County. She is president of the Hospice Cleveland County Founda- tion. She also serves on the board of the Dover Founda- tion based in Shelby. On a statewide level, she chairs the NC Section of the American College of Obste- tricians and Gynecologists and serves as a regional OB Champion for the NC Mater- nal Health Innovation Grant aimed at reducing the dispar- ity in maternal morbidity and mortality. In addition to her profes- sional roles, Dr. Borders and her husband are the proud parents of two sons.
