Wornica takes over reigns of PC girls basketball By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports editor@pressdispatch.net Former Pike Central standout Trey Wor nica is taking over the reigns of the Pike Central girls pro- gram. Wornica was a star ter on the 2015 and 2016 Pike Cen- tral sectional championship teams playing under coach Jason Roach. After graduating from Pike Central he played bas- ketball at Joliet Junior Col- lege for two years. During his freshman year the JJC Wolves won their region and district. He said they played nu- merous colleges in the Chi- cago area. It was real excit- ing to see dif ferent styles of basketball in the Chicago area. We played DuPage and Malcom X and a lot of good teams in the area. I saw a lot of dif ferent styles of basket- ball," said Wor nica. Following college, Wor- nica coached at Evansville Nor th under his former high school coach Jason Roach. "I worked my way up to being the junior varsity coach at Nor th," said Wornica. He star ted as a volunteer coach in the first season with Nor th. In his second season he was a paid assistant and then last year he was the ju- nior varsity head coach. Wornica is working as a teacher's aid at Pike Central with special needs children, while he continues to work on getting his teaching de- gree at Oakland City Univer- sity. "My plans and expecta- tions are to get better and get better day-by-day," said Wornica. One way he plans to do that is to get better athletes to come out for basketball. "We had the regional soft- ball championship team and not a lot of them play bas- ketball. I think there are a lot of girls with the ability to be three-spor t athletes out there." One of the ways he hopes to get better par ticipation is his coaching philosophy. "One of my core values is joy. I think you need to have fun playing the game you came out to play," said Wornica. "I have plenty of styles of basketball I want to r un," said Wornica. But he said he wanted to see who comes out and what style best fits their abilities. "We will have class and hu- mility," said Wornica of his Lady Charger team. His hiring comes at a dis- advantageous time. He was able to meet the team and over the weekend after he was hired, but he can not get them together for summer workouts until July 11, due to the summer moratorium on practices. He is working on build- ing his coaching staf f. He said former varsity coach Kyle McCutchan is going to coach the eighth grade team and Beth Schelling is go- ing to be the seventh grade coach. Jennifer Smith, who coached the eighth grade girls team last year, will be on the high school staf f this year. "There is a lot of tradition here at Pike Central in girls basketball. They won six consecutive regionals," said Wornica. "I'm ver y excited to take the reigns and have my own program," said Wornica about being head coach at Pike Central. Trey Wornica talks with his Evansville North junior varsity team during a break last season. Wornica was recently hired as Pike Central's varisty girls basketball head coach. "There is a lot of tradition here at Pike Central in girls basketball. They won six consecutive regionals," -Trey Wornica Kendric Sorgius has been named to the PAC All Conference first team as a junior. Happy Independence Day Local Investment. Jobs. Clean Energy.
