In "Dark Winds," based on the "Leaphorn & Chee" book series by Tony Hillerman and premiering Sunday, June 12, we are introduced to Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon, "Westworld," "Fargo"), a Tribal cop at a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley circa 1971. Most of Leaphorn's cases are pretty routine and that appears to be the case when he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. But the closer his investigations get to the truth, the more he's forced to deal with old wounds from his own past. Leaphorn goes on a mission to settle old childhood scores from the reservation, joined by his new deputy Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon, "Roswell, New Mexico"). Together, the two men battle forces of evil, both human and supernatural, as well as their own personal demons. Created by Graham Roland ("Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan"), the series also stars Jessica Matten ("Burden of Truth"), Noah Emmerich ("The Americans"), Deanna Allison and Rainn Wilson ("The Office") and counts George R.R. Martin, Robert Redford and McClarnon among its executive producers. It also features breathtaking photography of Monument Valley along the Arizona/Utah border, which McClarnon feels gives the series a unique flavor. "The locations were definitely a character in the show," McClarnon explains. "The southwest is majestic and vast which can't be ignored. Filming on Native land was always important to us as a team. The landscape was always an important part of the Hillerman series of books." As Leaphorn, McClarnon embodies a quietly tormented soul coping with personal loss while trying to balance his marriage with his job and his love of Native culture. Filming the series involved long hours, intense preparation and some weapons training, which wasn't a problem for the actor. But what did give him some pause was driving the vehicles of the era. "Driving those old trucks made me very grateful for the cars I drive today," he says. "No power steering and the turning radius was minimal. Also there was no acceleration. So driving them was definitely a challenge."
