June 12 - 18, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Cooking and baking gets competitive in streaming series on Netflix, discovery+ Streamers who dig culinary competition series will be in their glory this week as there are a number of new and recently premiered series and specials available for their consumption. Most prominent among them is "Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend." Premiering Wednesday, June 15, this reboot of the "Iron Chef " franchise features five new trailblazing Iron Chefs – Curtis Stone, Dominique Crenn, Marcus Samuelsson, Ming Tsai and Gabriela Cámara – facing off with Challenger Chefs Mason Hereford, Curtis Duffy, Claudette Zepeda, Esther Choi, Gregory Gourdet, Mei Lin and Yia Vang in challenges that push them to the limits of their endurance and creativity as they come up with extraordinary culinary creations. The competition's most successful Challenger will return to do battle in the grand finale for the chance to be named the first ever "Iron Legend." Andrew Zimmern and Nilou Motamed serve as judges along with a rotating panel that includes Justin Willman, Wolfgang Puck and Masaharu Morimoto. Over on Magnolia Network and discovery+ on Sunday, June 12, is the one-hour special "Silos Baking Competition." Taking place in Waco, Texas, this friendly competition challenges bakers to perfect a favorite recipe for a $25,000 prize and a chance to have their confection featured on the menu at Chip and Joanna Gaines' bakery, Silos Baking Co. The Gaineses also serve as judges. If French cuisine is your thing, then "The Julia Child Cooking Challenge" is for you. Currently streaming on discovery+, this competition that is inspired by the legendary chef pits eight talented home cooks and Child superfans in a series of high- stakes culinary challenges. Along the way, the chefs share personal stories about their hero, cook in a kitchen recreated in the likeness of where Child cooked, using the same ingredients she used and are even guided by the late chef herself via video. The winner, as determined by head judge Antonia Lofaso and a rotating panel including Molly Baz, Cliff Crooks and Brooke Williamson, wins an all- expense paid three-month cooking course at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Back on Netflix, deception is the order of the day on "Is It Cake?," an eight-episode series in which talented bakers create hyper-realistic cakes that look like everyday objects such as handbags, athletic shoes and bowling balls in the hopes of fooling a panel of celebrity judges. The winner gets a grand prize of $50,000. Mikey Day of "Saturday Night Live" is the host.
