Through the first four in- nings Williams had held Tri- West to two hits and a walk. That changed with the first batter in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kendall Williams hit the first pitch of the inning and sent it to the gap between right and center field. Char- ger center fielder Brailey Mills was chasing it, but ran out of room and slammed in- to the fence. The ball barely cleared and gave Tri-West a 1-0 lead. "Brailey was tracking it and I thought she was going to catch it, but the ball just kept carrying. If she would have had another two feet I think she could have made the catch," said Traylor. Mills' cleats were caught un- der the fence and she stayed down momentarily. Trainers came on the field to check on her. Mills had missed some time early in the season with a broken wrist suffered during basketball season, but she shook off the pain and re- turned to center field. Williams fanned the next three Bruin batters to end the inning and limit the damage. Coach Traylor encouraged the team, telling them they were just one run down. But they just couldn't get a bat on Lowry's pitches. From the last out of the first inning to the next-to-last batter in the sev- enth, Lowry struck out 18 con- secutive Charger batters. Tri-West added two more in- surance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as McKenna Hagemier led off with a single, then Isabelle Saylor crushed a 3-1 pitch that left no doubt as it easily sailed over the center field fence, making it 3-0. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Alyna Sharp got the Chargers' first hit of the game with a sharp line drive to right field. Senior So- phie Carnahan stretched Low- ry to 10 pitches, but watched a high fast ball go by that was called for the game-ending strike. It ended a season for the Lady Chargers that saw them win their second consecutive Class 3A sectional with a 4-0 win over Gibson Southern, fol- lowed by a dominating 9 -3 win over Heritage Hills in the re- gional. Pike Central finished the year 18 -7. Traylor said the Chargers had high expectations com- ing into the year, but they al- so had a lot to overcome with the right side of their infield gone. "Avery moved to first base, a position she had nev- er played, and really stepped up for us. We were able to meld all our pieces together and we just kind of all peaked at the same time," said Traylor of their late season run. "We are going to lose to se- nior leaders and they are go- ing to be hard to replace," said Traylor. TRI-WEST REPEATS AGAINST CORYDON CENTRAL Tri-West repeated their performance against Coryd- on Central in the semi-state final game. Lowry struck out 16 and the Bruins won 3-0 to advance to the state finals against South Bend St. Joseph at 8 p.m. on Friday. Tri-West is 29 -2 and SB St. Joseph is 27-3. ON A GREAT SEASON!
