Personal (Lives) Politics Anyone alive at the time remembers the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert as a massive affair that brought together music's biggest names to salute the Queen frontman who had died from AIDS five months earlier. Now, the story of how he faced his certain demise is told in a new documentary upcoming on The CW. "Freddie Mercury: The Final Act," airing Wednesday, April 20, on The CW, combines footage of that concert at London's Wembley Stadium and performances by Elton John, George Michael, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Roger Daltrey and Paul Young, among others, with new interviews with Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor to explore how Mercury faced his illness and the stigma and prejudice that went along with it with extraordinary courage. Directed by James Rogan ("1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything," "Uprising"), the two- hour film also explores the stories of others with the disease at the same time as Mercury, who with his death in November 1991 would become perhaps the highest-profile individual to fall victim to the AIDS pandemic. "For me, the film was not a documentary about music," Rogan says. "It was a musical in which he expressed himself through the songs he chose to sing. And every time you see him singing in the film, it sends sort of a shockwave through you because his voice was so unique and uniquely powerful." The documentary paints a portrait of an intensely private man who wanted to keep his condition under wraps and move forward, performing until he no longer could. That determination is especially evident in a segment about the recording of the 1991 song "The Show Must Go On," which chronicled his struggle. In the film, May recalls how a frail, weak Mercury took a couple of shots of vodka and then belted the song with such power and majesty that he left his bandmates agog. "What you realized was the sheer courage that he had," Rogan says, "the strength that he had to actually pull those vocals up from the depths of his soul and sort of commit them to the tape in the way that he did. And I think even Brian describing it again was caught by the emotion of what Freddie was trying to do. He wanted to sing right up until the moment that he couldn't sing anymore."
