Rod Steiger earned his own Academy Award as a Southern town's bigoted police chief who reluctantly accepts the help of a Black detective from Philadelphia (Sidney Poitier, who reprised his Virgil Tibbs role in two sequels) in probing a homicide. The racial tension baked into the story is a huge element of the adaptation of John Ball's novel, director Norman Jewison's superb cast also includes Warren Oates, Lee Grant, Larry Gates, Beah Richards (who played Poitier's mother the same year in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner") and Scott Wilson. Ray Charles sings the evocative title song. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) "THE KING'S DAUGHTER" Fantasy is very much the order of this attraction, which ended up being one of the last projects to feature the late William Hurt, though it was filmed eight years before its release. However, Pierce Brosnan plays the titular king – Louis XIV, specifically – who literally wants to live forever, so he corrals a mermaid (Fan Bingbing) who can give him that gift, even by force. His daughter (Kaya Scodelario) doesn't like what he's up to, though, and she interferes with his plans. Benjamin Walker and Pablo Schreiber also are in director Sean McNamara's cast, and Julie Andrews narrates the tale, based on Vonda N. McIntyre's novel "The Moon and the Sun." ››› (PG: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) "HEAVY METAL" Before his recent passing, producer Ivan Reitman supervised a new sound mix for this cult-classic 1981 animated feature inspired by the title magazine, and now making its debut on 4K Ultra HD. Lavishly detailed artistry tells how a mysterious green orb causes damage across the universe, and the only hope of stopping it is for it to encounter its true opposing force, which will imbue it with goodness. The voice cast includes several popular Reitman collaborators of the time, John Candy, Eugene Levy and Harold Ramis – but the soundtrack is comprised of a who's-who of the era's music, such as Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth and Stevie Nicks. Reitman also is seen in a "making-of" documentary included among the extra features. ›› (R: AS, N, P, V) "FROM THE JOURNALS OF JEAN SEBERG" A combination of documentary and dramatization, director Mark Rappaport's 1995 film examines the life of actress Seberg, whose personal troubles threatened a career that had a meteoric launch thanks to filmmaker Otto Preminger – who made her the winner of s talent search that made her an immediate star both in America and Europe. Eventually, her career would encompass such big-budget efforts as "Airport" and "Paint Your Wagon," but fame had a different meaning for her by the time she reached that point. Mary Beth Hurt ("Chilly Scenes of Winter") plays Seberg in the staged sequences of the project, which also considers other actresses who followed similar trajectories in the same era, such as Jane Fonda. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) "ELVIS: 7-FILM COLLECTION" Fans of movie and music icon Presley will find plenty of him In this gathering of several of his features – including the one that many devotees consider his best, "Viva Las Vegas," also starring Ann-Margret, who was dubbed "the female Elvis" by some at the time. She plays the intended conquest of a race-car driver (Presley). "Jailhouse Rock," "Girl Happy," "Spinout," the concert films "Elvis: That's the Way it Is" and "Elvis on Tour," and the biographical "This Is Elvis" are the other titles here. ››› (Not rated: AS) "JACKASS FOREVER" Times have changed, but "Jackass" hasn't. Johnny Knoxville and company are back in action with the don't-try-this-at-home brand of stunts that made the concept such a hit on MTV and set up a series of movie spinoffs ... which could be even more unbridled on the big screen. This home-video edition includes segments left out of the theatrical version, on the order of "Tarantula Bite" and "Soccer Ball Surprise." Besides this attraction being available on its own, it's also the part of a four-pack that includes all of the "Jackass" movies. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu- ray, Digital and On Demand) "Jackass Forever" "I think I'm very right for it, just coming from doing as much television as I have. I'm very comfortable with making quick decisions and moving fast. That's not daunting to me." – Melora Hardin, seen recently in "Love, Classified" on Hallmark Channel, on the possibility of her doing more TV directing "It is a prime time for discussions of right and wrong, of moral centers.
