"More Than Robots" (March 18) Best known as an actress in sitcoms such as "Community" and "Love," Gillian Jacobs stepped behind the camera to direct this feature-length documentary that follows four teams of teenagers from around the world as they prepare for the 2020 First Robotics Competition amid a global pandemic and with limited resources. (ORIGINAL) 10 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • March 13 - 19, 2022 BEST RICHARD DREYFUSS MOVIES "American Graffiti" (1973) As Curt, the member of a group of early '60s high- school pals who seemed most likely to succeed, Dreyfuss had the perfect role for his wit and energy. "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" (1974) The title role of a Montreal hustler gave Dreyfuss another significant step toward lasting recognition and fame. "Jaws" (1975) Stardom was cemented for Dreyfuss in the role of shark expert Matt Hooper, who knew enough to be scared at the right moments, in the blockbuster that also established director Steven Spielberg's career. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) Dreyfuss reteamed with Steven Spielberg, with mashed potatoes and aliens thrown in for good measure, in another modern classic. "The Goodbye Girl" (1977) Oscar came calling for Dreyfuss for his work as a struggling actor sharing an apartment with its existing tenant (Marsha Mason, then-wife of the tale's writer, Neil Simon). Turner Classic Movies shows the film Friday, March 18. "The Big Fix" (1978) Some of Dreyfuss' best moments in this light mystery, about a radical turned detective, are quiet ones as the character tearfully watches home movies of his past. "The Competition" (1980) Dreyfuss is at his Dreyfuss-est as a piano prodigy making one last bid to win a related contest. "Stand by Me" (1986) Largely in a prolonged-flashback voiceover, Dreyfuss adds much to the Stephen King story of an adventure among boyhood pals. "Stakeout" (1987) In the same year Mel Gibson and Danny Glover scored buddy-cop success in "Lethal Weapon," Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez also did here. "Once Around" (1991) Dreyfuss effectively has his "brash" quotient set on "high" as a salesman who irritates the close family of his new love (Holly Hunter). "The American President" (1995) Director Rob Reiner uses him sparingly, but Dreyfuss' presence is felt as a smug senator who wants to unseat the chief executive (Michael Douglas) in the next election. "Mr. Holland's Opus" (1995) A music teacher determined to create a timeless composition is among Dreyfuss' signature roles. "Poseidon" (2006) This "Poseidon Adventure" remake is much more an effects movie than an actors' picture, but Dreyfuss is extremely moving as a man having a hard time coping with a recently ended relationship when the huge wave hits the ship.
