Timed to go up to (and several days beyond) the Academy Awards ceremony – which is set for March 27 – the 2022 festival of attractions only includes titles that actually won Oscars, rather than also encompassing pictures that ended up only as nominees, which TCM typically has in the month's lineup as well. The schedule also goes chronologically through the decades night by night. Among the many highlights for the week of March 13: "Sense and Sensibility" (Sunday; 1995), which Emma Thompson not only stars in, but adapted from Jane Austen's novel; "All Quiet on the Western Front" (Monday; 1930), the Lew Ayres-starring drama that's both a war story and an antiwar statement; "National Velvet" (Tuesday; 1944), the horse tale that did much for Elizabeth Taylor's stardom; and "Marty" (Wednesday; 1955), which made Ernest Borgnine a best-actor winner as a lovelorn butcher. Also: "The Music Man" (Thursday; 1962), with Robert Preston reprising his Broadway role as tuneful con man "Professor" Harold Hill; "Annie Hall" (Friday; 1977), Woody Allen's cleverly structured romantic comedy, with best-actress winner Diane Keaton effectively playing herself in the title part; and "Out of Africa" (Saturday, 1985), Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack's scenic drama teaming Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. "I have to say, this is always my favorite month of the year on TCM," admits Dave Karger, the channel's ever-amiable host on Monday nights and Saturday afternoons. "It's because I'm such an Oscar nerd, and I'm always so curious to see how our programming team formats the month. This year, because every one of the films has won at least one Oscar, I feel like it adds some extra cachet." Karger also gets to showcase certain categories of winners, such as best director and best actor, and he's satisfied with what he's been given to introduce. "The good news is that there are no losers here," he reasons. "Every decade (of film) is so interesting, and that's what's fascinating for me as someone who studies the Oscars and loves to focus on them, how the winners have evolved over the years. "It goes from the first decade of the Oscars, when it was mostly war movies and musicals, then to the more issue-oriented films of the 1940s like 'The Grapes of Wrath' and 'Gentleman's Agreement' and 'The Long Weekend.' Then in the late '50s and the '60s, you hit the period of the epics like David Lean's films and 'Ben-Hur.' Then there are the star-driven Oscar films of the '80s, and in more recent years, you've seen the (Motion Picture) Academy turning to more international films."
