This was the last weekend of points for the 2021 Kansas City Barbeque Society Championship. The event was held at the Cleveland County Fair Ground and was organized by long time barbeque competitors from Shelby, Cleveland County, NC and presented by The BBQ League. The Rufus Teague BBQ Throwdown Series provided awards and named winners from their series Grand and Grand Reserve Champions. Thirty-three teams from 10 states competed in the 2 day event. Sponsors for this year's event were: The BBQ League, Rufus Teague BBQ Throwdown Series, Numbers Bookkeeping, H&H Pest Control, Hampton Inn of Shelby, Cummings Furniture, Dedmon Harvest Store, and Dragonfl y Marketing and Events. Awards were presented each day to the top 5 competitors in each category, Grand Reserve Champion and Grand Champion titles. Each team competed in 4 meats: chicken, pork ribs, pork butt or shoulder and brisket. KCBS Certifi ed Judges for the event were from as far away as Davos Dorf, Switzerland and as close as Shelby, NC, USA. The Crest High School Marching Charges played the National Anthem at both awards ceremony and provided a drum roll for each winner. Over $11,000 was awarded to the winners this weekend. The organizing party is planning to add some activities for the public to next year's event. The 2nd Annual Shelby BBQ Extravaganza is scheduled for October 28-30, 2022. The 19th Annual Toys, Games and Trains Exhibit at Kings Mountain Historical Museum is soon to open! On Monday, November 22 at 5:30 pm there is a chance to get a fi rst look at this year's exhibit in the magic of a nighttime atmosphere and with festive snacks that will remind you of holiday seasons past. If you love coming to see the trains every year, this is a great chance to add to your experience. Please RSVP by Friday, November 19th by calling (704)739-1019. Tickets can be purchased on the KMHM website. This year's exhibit has fi lled the Museum with model train displays assembled by local "S" Gaugers, as well as railroad memorabilia, and antique toys and games. Visitors of all ages will be enchanted as they explore the miniature snow-covered scenes that line the tracks, and discover the interactive carousel, hot air balloons, and mailbag pickup. Parents and grandparents will enjoy reminiscing about the toys and games of their childhood. The exhibit will open to the public on Friday, November 26, 2021, and end on Friday, January 7, 2022. Admission to the museum is always free! Regular hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter played in honoring often overlooked minority patriots who par- ticipated at the Battle of Kings Mountain, on Sun- day, November 14 at 3 pm at American Legion Post 82, 1628 S. Lafayette St., in Shelby. Cozart is a member of the Col. Frederick DAR Hambright Chapter in Kings Mountain. She has been a member for 19- years and has served three terms as Chapter Regent. She is a Kings Mountain native who enjoys local history and writes for the Kings Mountain Herald. Her column, Pieces of Kings Mountain History, runs every other week and features observations and tidbits of history about the community.
