The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 8, 2021 B-5 Letter to the Editor After six months of the Biden Administration, this is what we expected then are the ones bleating to- day about unfairness and the wealth gap. Rather than betraying the tradition of free enterprise capitalism that built cor- porate America, America's corporations should be pro- moting these values. This is the path to more prosperity, more justice, for all Ameri- cans. Star Parker is president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education and host of the weekly television show "Cure America with Star Parker." high commissioner for human rights, has warned that [w]omen, minorities, human rights de- fenders, journalists as well as others who are particularly vulnerable need particu- lar protection [from the Taliban]. There are very real risks of renewed atrocities against ethnic and religious minorities. But the Biden administration appears to have been unprepared for a Taliban takeover of A fghanistan, and now is ei- ther incapable of or unwilling to mitigate the resulting human rights disaster. Al- though this administration repeatedly has claimed to have "planned for every contingency," the realities we are seeing on the ground betray that claim. It is a bitter and tragic irony that a lib- eral administration ever-interested in expanding the list of "human rights" thinks that doing so requires rejecting a framework that prioritizes protection of the most basic fundamental rights, such as religious freedom, ahead of positive rights created by the state. Unfortunately, the "progressive" left sees promoting religious freedom as an impediment to advancing abortion, a top priority of the Biden administration both domestically and abroad. The left's deep-seated instinct to make abortion the central "women's issue" has left it ill-prepared to protect and promote the fundamental rights—to life, religious belief, conscience, and speech—of A f- ghan women. Headlines show A fghan women seeking to exercise their funda- mental rights; these women are not clam- oring for abortion on demand. The Taliban undoubtedly will commit severe human rights abuses against the A fghan people, particularly women. To potentially stop those abuses, Biden must commit his administration to champion- ing fundamental human rights for all in- dividuals on the basis of human dignity. It's time to get priorities straight. Grace Melton serves as Senior Associate for Social Issues at the United Nations for The Heritage Foundation's DeVos Center. If you are proven a direct threat to others — if your be- havior kills — then the safe- ty police do have a right to step in to stop you from hurt- ing others. Short of that, politicians should never force us to put anything into our own bod- ies. John Stossel is author of "Give Me a Break: How I Ex- posed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media." CORPORATE Continued from page 4 VACCINE Continued from page 4 sionate conflict." If Jesus were to read W.K.'s response, he would tell him, "You're close to the kingdom of God." W.K. says that the world isn't being destroyed by democrats or republicans, liberals or conservative, re- ligious or atheists. No, the world is being destroyed by one group of people believing their beliefs or way of think- ing is better than the others who think differently. W.K.'s wisest words are, "The world officially ends when we let our beliefs conquer love. We must not let this happen." The New Testament an- nounces God is Love. Je- sus said, there is no greater love than a person who gives their life for their friends. Paul says to the Corinthians that we have faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love. Shortly before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples, "A new command- ment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another." To love your neighbor as yourself is difficult un- der the best of circumstanc- es. Jesus said, "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spiteful- ly use you and persecute you." Love makes no excep- tions. How do you love some- one who, if given the chance, would kill you? Jesus says the answer is prayer. Jesus never classified a person as worthy or unwor- thy of God's love. If God cares about the sparrow and every hair on your head, then every person has God's atten- tion. Every human is a per- son of value, a creation of God, someone worthy and in need of God's love and grace. W.K. finishes his response by concluding, "Love your dad because he's your father, because he made you, be- cause he thinks for himself, and most of all because he is a person. Have the strength to doubt and question what you believe as easily as you're so quick to doubt his beliefs. Live with a truly open mind — the kind of open mind that even questions the idea of an open mind. Don't feel the need to always pick a side. And if you do pick a side, pick the side of love. It re- mains our only real hope for survival and has more pow- er to save us than any other belief we could ever cling to. Your friend, Andrew W.K." Sounds like something Je- sus would say. What do you think? all income taxes. But, even if that were possible, is that a good thing for a democra- cy? Is it good that one out of 100 people bear the bur- den of half of all the taxes? These are highly successful people for sure, and most are small-business owners and investors. Still, since when in America do we have an explicit policy of punishing success? The other troubling trend in federal tax policy is that since the coronavirus hit, the share of people who pay no taxes at all has skyrocketed. The Tax Policy Center shows that six of 10 households paid no federal income tax- es during pandemic-strick- en 2020. That's right. Zero. Suppose the Biden plan, which dramatically expands tax credits for children and offers other loopholes, is passed. In that case, this percentage could rise to two- thirds of households avoiding income taxes altogether. It is a dangerous trend. Do we really want nearly 200 million people receiving free government services but not paying any income tax to sup- port the government? If the government becomes essen- tially free for most people, then these citizens will tend to vote continuously for more free goods and services. It is an outcome for which our forefathers issued warnings. They worried that if voters come to believe they can vote for spending policies that line their own pockets and make other people pay, our democ- racy will perish. The temptation to plunder the wealth of the rich legal- ly is called "the tyranny of the majority." It is why ev- ery worker and voter should have skin in the game in how our government spends mon- ey. One way to ensure this is to have a tax system that re- quires everyone to contrib- ute, even if it is only a few hundred dollars of taxes a year. A simple flat tax rate of 19 percent without all the loop- holes would force almost ev- eryone to pay some tax each year. Moreover, it would pre- clude the millionaire and bil- lionaire crowd from shelter- ing the bulk of their income in loopholes and exotic de- ductions. The Democrats love to talk about how "we are all in this together," and they are right. This is why we must not tol- erate an income tax system with more than half of the public paying nothing. If on- ly the rich pay the taxes, then a common lesson of history is that there are fewer and few- er rich people to soak over time. Stephen Moore is a senior fellow at FreedomWorks. SOCIALIST Continued from page 4 THE RICH Continued from page 4 RIGHTS Continued from page 4 To the Editor: Well after six months of the Biden Ad- ministration it was just like we expect- ed. Abortion is one of the top priorities of this administration and this is coming at no surprise to the pro-life movement. From one executive order to the next and from every appointment in his adminis- tration, it has been nothing but hard core pro-abortion. There has been no hint of middle ground on this life issue but ev- eryone who Biden has appointed is far to the left and strongly pro-abortion. We were given ample warning of the danger this administration would have on this country, but some did not listen as they were more concerned with ha- tred of the past president. Some voters now publicly regret that decision but it may be too late to recover from the dam- age that will be done by this Biden Ad- ministration. We know from his first day in office President Joe Biden issued exec- utive orders that has altered or changed all the pro-life executive orders that were put in place by former President Trump. And there are other areas that are of grave concern from this administration and his band of socialists. A big concern is the disaster that is taking place at the southern border, people pouring across at a record pace and the border patrol not able to check out these people coming in- to this country. With the southern border being wide open we see many coming in- to our country who are of the criminal element and these are the ones caught. We have no idea how many have gotten through without being detected, because the Biden Administration has open the flood gates. We do not know how many terror- ists, criminals and other clientele that we would rather not have in this coun- try. The ones who are caught are given a free ride with all the perks of a citizen of the United States. We don't object to people coming in- to this country, but they need to do it le- gally! And now we turn to A fghanistan where President Biden wants to blame all his problems on the commitment made by the former President Donald Trump. The former administration agreed to pull troops out of A fghanistan but President Trump did not plan on abandoning the Americans or the A fghans who helped the United States and fought alongside our troops when we were there trying to stabilize that country. It was the bad decisions made by Presi- dent Biden to pull out the way he did as he turned tail and ran. He was willing to sac- rifice lives and equipment just to get out. Former President Trump agreed to pull out of A fghanistan but the way Biden did it was not smart. You don't wait till the last minute to pull troops out before you have removed civilians and people who helped in the war effort. The ones left be- hind have been given a death sentence. It is remarkable how the military has been able to airlift the thousands out be- fore the deadline, but not before suicide bombers killed so many. This did not end well! Our Allies are wondering what is going on and who is making these decisions. The credibility of the United States has sunk to a new low under this adminis- tration and it has been another huge di- saster. But that is not the only problems we are seeing in America with the Biden Administration. The pipeline cancella- tion could send gas prices to record lev- els in his first year in office. Here in this country the price of gas has already ris- en more than $1 per gallon since Biden took office. It will get worse. We had just reached energy indepen- dence during the past administration and now Biden is asking the oil rich countries to up production. What is this president thinking? A person has to wonder if this adminis- tration is trying to wreck our country and our credibility at the same time. We are in for some dark times under a Biden/ Harris Administration. Much of what this president has done was to appease the far left wing of the democrat party. President Biden has al- so embraced many parts of socialism that will be very destructive to our county and religious concerns. It is no wonder that during the 2020 Presidential Campaign the Democratic Campaign had Joe Biden to stay in his basement and only come out for photo opps. I am sure some Democrats now regret their vote for this president, but it may be too late to turn back the clock.
