SPORTS BRIEFS 9/11 Heroes Walk, Run and Ride This year marks the third year that the 9/11 Heroes Memorial Walk, Run and Ride will take place. This year's event will be on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the courthouse in Princeton, with the proceeds benefiting the Indiana Chap- ter of C.O.P.S. and Habitat for Humanity. The race will fall on the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. They are accepting monetary donations or items to be used as door prizes, as well as having four categories for donations: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Kiwanis to host 9/11 golf scramble The Petersburg Kiwanis will host a golf scramble at Prides Creek Golf Course on September 11 at 9 a.m. The scramble will have cash prizes for the top three teams. To sign up, go to the Prides Creek Golf Course club house or call 812-354-6059. Sign up fee is $40 a person or $160 a team. Volunteers sought to prep duck blinds October 2 Monroe Lake will host a workday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 2 for volunteers to help clean, repair, and cut brush to camouflage duck blinds in the Stillwater-North- fork Wildlife Area, in preparation for waterfowl hunting season. Volunteers do not need to stay the whole day. Advance registration is requested at bit.ly/ camouduck2021 by noon on October 1, but last-minute volunteers are welcome to come on Saturday morning at the Northfork Check Station, located east of Bloomington off of State Road 46, about 1/3 mile south of the intersec- tion of Kent Road and McGowan Road. For more detailed directions, call the Monroe Lake office at 812-837-9546. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring work gloves, hand tools useful for cutting brush, and a water bottle. If you plan to stay into the afternoon, bring a sack lunch. Youth under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. In the girls junior and se- nior division, Charger senior Quinlan Teague took third place with a time of 21:21, placing her in the top ten. Morgan Anderson, Charger senior, placed 32nd with a time of 29:33. Finishing in the junior se- nior boys division for the Chargers were: Peyton Chan- ley, junior, placing 13th with a time of 18:15; and junior Dal- las Reutepohler placing 33rd with a time of 20 :24. Charger sophomore Shane Woodhall competed in the freshman and sophomore boys race for Pike Central placing 34th with a time of 20 :51. Head Coach Randy Graham commented, "It was a great night for the kids, as they im- proved upon their times from their dual meet on Tuesday night. We had some strong individual performances." Columbus North Invitational stiff competition for Chargers By Matthew Haycraft Pike Central's cross coun- try boys and girls competed at the Columbus North Invi- tational on Saturday, Septem- ber 4. The Chargers boys finished ninth out of 23 teams with a top five average time of 18:48. Austin High School took home first with their top five average time of 16:50. Charger junior Peyton Chanley placed 41st with a time of 17:58. Blaine Bar- nett, freshman, placed 60th in 18:31. Sophomore Jeremy Delobel placed 63rd in 18:37. Junior Dallas Reutepohler placed 64th with a time of 18:41. Sophomore Charger Shane Woodhull placed 111th win 20 :13. Freshman Tyler DeCoursey placed 165th with a time of 23:21. Charger fresh- man Carter Blackwell placed 170th in 24:46. In the girls races, the La- dy Chargers finished seventh out of 16 teams with a top five average time of 21:43. Indian Creek High School took home the first with a top five aver- age time of 20 :10, so the La- dy Chargers ran a good race by the average standard com- pared to the first place time av- erage. Freshman Xavery Weis- man placed 11th with a time of 19:50. Charger senior Quin- lan Teague placed 21st with a time of 20 :49. Junior Kenne- dy Willis placed 44th in 22:16. Sophomore Anna Whitehead placed 52nd with a time of 22:33. Freshman Kaylyn War- ner placed 67th in 23:09. Mor- gan Anderson, Charger se- nior, placed 116th with a time of 27:45. Head Coach Randy Graham stated, "(This was) a great meet for our kids today. They ran against some solid compe- tition. Several of our athletes got to compete in their first meet and everyone else either ran their best time of the year or were right at it. This was our third meet in five days, so running the times we did was not easy. Our runners are defi- nitely headed the right direc- tion." Coach Shedd commented that the first set was the best volleyball the team had played yet this season, and that it was exciting to watch the ladies communicate and work to- gether. She also stated they were still missing players, so the team got a little worn down and tired as they went through the sets. The Lady Chargers fell to Forest Park in the other sets 21-25, 8 -25, 14-25. On Thursday, September 2 the Lady Chargers varsity volleyball team captured their first win of the season against Shoals with a score of 25 -23, 25 -19. Charger senior Jaize Mills finished the game with five aces, 11 kills and seven digs. Sophomore Haylie Fulcher added four kills and two aces; and sophomore Karley Kava- naugh, finished added 13 as- sists and three aces. "Everyone played tough. We played aggressively at the net and communicated as a team. I am proud of the way they came out to win," said Coach Shedd. The team followed up with two matches on Saturday, Sep- tember 4, clinching the win at Tell City, in the morning, with a score of 20 -25, 27-25, 21-25, 25 -16, 15 -13. Kavanaugh ended the match with 18 assists and one block. Senior Erika Vinnedge put up two blocks, one ace and eight kills. Mills contributed eight digs, five kills and five aces. Sophomore Lexie On- yett added 12 digs and four aces. Coach Shedd commented that this was a well-deserved win against Tell City, that is a good team with hard hitting all around. She added that the Lady Chargers exhibited ex- cellent play, with confidence, fighting hard and battling for the victory. "I am excited to keep push- ing forward and adding those wins to our record," stated Coach Shedd on the morn- ing's game at Tell City. Saturday evening the La- dy Charger wrapped up the weeks games suffering a loss to Mount Vernon with a score of 17-25, 10 -25, 11-25. Coach Shedd summed up the game and the week by stat- ing, "We had a rough game. Mt. Vernon had all-around great hitting and we couldn't quite get our hand on the ball to block or slow it down. Our back row passers did a great job of serve receiving and get- ting their passes to the setter. They were a tough team, but didn't play mentally strong in the second and third sets." "We are preparing to get back after it next week. We want to continue to improve and learn from our mistakes."
