B-6 Wednesday, September 8, 2021 The Press-Dispatch FOOTBALL Continued from page 1 son at right end, freshman Bil- ly Like at right corner, fresh- man Justin Spinks at left cor- ner and freshman Matthew Meadows as free safety. Out- side linebackers were junior Braden Howald and freshman Aire O'Neal. Inside lineback- ers were junior Corey Goep- pner and sophomore Justin Leeds, along with returning starter, Chargers junior Jagar Dent at middle linebacker. Pike Central had a rough start, with a worm burner kick-off to the 35 where it was picked up and taken straight downfield for a South Spencer 70 -yard touch down. However, junior Isaac Marchino put fourth a great effort creating pressure on the thrower, forcing a bad throw for a failed PAT. South Spencer led 6 -0 with 11:48 minutes remaining. The rest of the game went down from there but the Char- gers held their heads up and kept on giving it their all de- spite missing players and missing plays. With 8:45 on the score- board South Spencer Rebels had a 24 yard pass from Na- than Hurt to Kyle Olmstead followed with a good kick from Jaxson Hadley leaving the score 13-0 in Rebels' fa - vor. South Spencer added a 25 yard interception return by Dawon Rodgers and a good kick by Rebels' Hadley, taking the score to 20 -0. This contin- ued through the rest of the first quarter straight through the second and third quarters with the score by that time be- ing 43-0. Pike Central fought through the third quarter af- ter halftime holding the Reb- els to one score as John Brown for a 67-yard run. South Spen- cer led 49 -0 at the end of the third quarter. The Chargers continued to keep the faith and heart in their game with heads-up, focused and showing good sportsmanship into the fourth quarter. The Rebels added one touchdown for a 55 -0 final score. Matthew Meadows was 3- 7 passing for 5 yards and two interceptions, and was sacked for -6 yards. Howald had 13 carries for 118 yards, longest being a 63 yard run. Dent had one carry for -1 yard. Loveless had three carries for three yards, and Meadows with. Re- ceiving: O'Neal with three re- ceptions for five yards. Howald had four kick-off re- turns for 116 yards, Loveless two for total of 18 yards, Dent one for 15 yards and Nossett one for six yards. Coach Brashear comment- ed on Howald's performance during the game saying, "I thought that Braden How- ald was exceptional Friday night. He was everywhere on the field. He is a true warrior. I wish all of our kids had the same approach to the game as Braden does. He only knows one way to play and that is all- out. He is a very good leader. He knows what everyone is supposed to do on both sides of the ball. He is very coach- able and works extremely hard to get better each day." "Braden finished the game with 229 all-purpose yards. That's a great accomplish- ment playing against a solid team like South Spencer." Coach Brashear wrapped up his thoughts on the game stating, "We are very young and inexperienced, and it showed in the game. We are asking a lot of 14 and 15 year old freshmen to play against 17 and 18 year old juniors and seniors. It's like men play- ing against boys. I was very pleased with the way we didn't hang our heads. We battled all night, in spite of the lopsided score." "Every coach wants to win every game, and I am no ex- ception. I hate to lose, but I told our players after the game that at this point I am not nearly as concerned about the score on the scoreboard as I am about improving day-by- day and week-by-week in ev- erything we do on the field. We can't worry about wins. They will eventually come. We have to be committed to the process of building a solid football foundation here. That takes years to do." Pike Central will play their next game at Southridge on Friday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. Chargers' Braden Howald makes a dash downfield after a reception during game action at Pike Central against South Spencer on Friday, September 3. Chargers defensive lineman Conner Loveless, freshman, holds off Dawson Rogers of the Rebels during game action at Pike Central against South Spencer on Friday, September 3.
