The Word is There Will Be No Cake and Balloons When my brother, Bill Jobe, retires from Ronco Communi- cations on Friday, Aug. 27, his wife, Gloria, will likely have to pick him up as he drove his company vehicle to work that morning. At 65, his retirement will likely pass like another page torn off a calendar, anoth- er click in somebody's smart- phone. No big deal. That's not right. He will not quit working. There is a sense in which he has al- most never done anything else. He started getting paid at 11 years old, and because he was working for our daddy, no child labor laws were violated. He has written a memoir of those days and the 54 years that followed which he will soon publish on Amazon. Those of you who have read excerpts on Facebook love them and tell me how good they are. My life- long friend Gary Phillips says he is the best writer in the fam- ily. His skills will still be in de- mand, especially for those of you who live in or near Shelby. At the risk of violating some kind of licensing restrictions, let me just say that he can fi x any- thing and has the tools to do so. On a recent Saturday he mowed his grass and that of one of his neighbors, fi xed a fence, cleaned out a shed, hammered a few nails and turned a few bolts. Gloria said, "When you retire, you don't have to work as hard as you do on your day off." When our mother, Ruth Jobe, wanted to praise some person in the community for organiz- ing and making things happen, she would call them, "a dirt mover." By the time I heard her say it more than once, I knew she was also talking about my brother. The contrast to our daddy, Allen Jobe, is hilarious. I have absolutely no memory of his ever holding a wrench, a ham- mer, or a screwdriver. He only mowed our lawn once, and when he did all the neighbors came out to watch. Daddy could fi x nothing, but knew how to use a telephone. It was his favorite tool. Bill has saved himself and my family and many others of his friends and neighbors thou- sands of dollars in repairs. He also has moved me more times than I can count. I feel like I owe him the moon. He is not trying to collect so far. When he moved Gabriele and me to Greenville, S.C. in 2009, his truck was piled so high that one of our neighbors asked if the Beverly Hillbillies were coming to town. He once spoke to our Green- ville congregation and when I introduced him, I said he had heard the Bible read as a child and heard, "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." He said, "I can do that." He has done it countless times. And unlike our daddy and me, he can actually fi x things when they break. He once told me he has perma- nent job security because something is always breaking and always needs fi xing. Don't dream for a second that he is actually retiring. It will take a lot more than a date on a cal- endar to even slow him down. Contact Pat Jobe at pat- jobe13@gmail.com. He is the minister of All Souls Communi- ty which can be found through his email and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lake Norman which is at uulake- norman.org. His latest book is called It's About Jesus, It's Not About Max Burgin and A Brief History Of The Church Of The Exceptional. It's on sale at Next Door Books, Smith's Drugs and from Amazon.
