Washington St. Shelby, NC 704-487-4521 www.arnold'sjewelry.com "The Diamond Leader" My fi shing experiences as a youth were either alone or with the gang that made up Ford's Woods. What I learned about fi shing came from the same sources. I can remember as a youth the day I was bit by the "bass" bug. Even though I had never been to the lake, the levee was known to be full of largemouth. And even though it was still in my small town, for a kid who either walked or rode his bicycle everywhere, it was a little further away than I was used to going. One summer morning however, we made the trip to the levee for my fi rst attempt at catching a bass. I don't exactly remember how I got the information, but I would be using as bait a red plastic worm. That day marked two distinct changes that, to this day, still affect my fi shing. First, it brought a love for that particular game fi sh and second it made me learn to love the plastic worm. I caught fi ve bass on that fi rst day. When I did start going to the lake as an older youth and a young adult, I can never remember not throwing a plastic worm. In fact, that's the only bait I ever used. While others were cranking and spinning, I was patiently and methodically throwing that worm. It is still my favorite bait today. Much like that infamous fi rst day of bass fi shing there are other markers in all of our lives that changed us forever. Some of those markers were happy moments and some were unhappy and even tragic. But all of them were and are signifi cant. They are signifi cant because when you put them together over the years, you see a pattern and piece of a puzzle. It's a pattern of how God has worked in our lives even when we didn't realize he was there. It's a piece of a puzzle because our lives would not be complete without those markers. Even something as simple as a fi rst fi shing trip can become a story you are reading right now. Nothing is insignifi cant to God. And no pain is wasted. If we let him, he will take every moment of our lives, no matter how good or bad, and use it to make us and the ones around us better. For a Christian it is his promise and that is one more reason to make sure you are. It's not too late to allow God to make a message from the markers and messes in your life. Wildlife Resources Commission just certifi ed two catfi sh state records that were broken within one week of each other in July. Rocky Baker of Four Oaks broke the blue catfi sh record on July 10 and Taner Rudolph of Hubert broke the channel catfi sh record on July 17. Baker caught his 127-pound 1-ounce blue catfi sh on the Ro- anoke River with gizzard shad. The fi sh measured 60 inches long and 40 1/4 inches in girth. He used a Mad Cat rod and Penn Squall reel. His fi sh was weighed on scales at the EZ Bait & Tackle in Goldsboro. Rudolph, who broke a record that was broken for the fi rst time in 50 years last year, reeled in his 26-pound channel catfi sh on the Neuse River using cut bait. The fi sh mea- sured 38 5/8 inches long and 22 ¾ inches in girth. He used a Shakespeare rod and reel. His fi sh was weighed on the same scales in Goldsboro as Bakers. These are the fi rst two freshwater fi sh state records certifi ed in North Carolina this year. Three anglers broke state catfi sh records in 2020. To qualify for a N.C. Freshwater Fish State Record, anglers must have caught the fi sh by rod and reel or cane pole; have the fi sh weighed on a scale certifi ed by the N.C. Department of Agriculture, witnessed by one observer; have the fi sh identi- fi ed by a fi sheries biologist from the Wildlife Commission; and submit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fi sh for record certifi cation. For anglers who catch a catfi sh that doesn't quite measure up to this latest record-breakers but yet still meet minimum size and length requirements, the Commission has blue and channel catfi sh classifi cations for its North Carolina Angler Recognition Program (NCARP). NCARP offi cially recogniz- es anglers who catch trophy-sized freshwater fi sh that do not qualify for a state record with a certifi cate featuring color re- productions of fi sh artwork by renowned wildlife artist and for- mer Commission fi sheries biologist Duane Raver. For a list of all freshwater fi sh state records in North Caro- lina or more information on the State Record Fish Program, visit the Commission's State Record Fish program webpage, www.ncwildlife.org/Fishing.
