This fall, Beef Production is one of two new agriculture classes that will be on the course schedule. The other new class is Poultry Production. Over the past few years, the college has been working with the Cleveland County Ag Advisory Board and local high school agricul- ture teachers to develop agriculture classes. Agriculture is a major part of the Cleveland County economy, generating over $130 mil- lion dollars in revenue each year from crops and livestock raised in the county. The county ranks 7th in the state in total head of cattle, and 16th in the state in broilers produced each year. In the past, many people learned about farming from growing up on farms, but now with fewer family farms, it can be more diffi cult to gain farming experience and knowledge. Plus, farming today is more high-tech than ever, with farmers using self-driving tractors, drones to monitor crop growth, and sensors to monitor soil moisture and fertility. The new agriculture classes will be part of the college's new Biotech degree. The de- gree will offer a mix of animal science, agri- business, and biotechnology classes. It's de- signed to give students a broad foundation in biology and agricultural sciences that can be used to farm or pursue local job opportunities, such as jobs as a veterinary technician, poul- try service technician, and agricultural sales representative. The classes are also transfer- able to four-year universities. In addition, the program will also allow students to get practical work experience through internships on farms and in farm-re- lated businesses. Both Beef Production and Poultry Production will be offered in the eve- ning, so students who work during the day can enroll. For anyone interested in more in- formation about the classes, please contact Brandon Adair, Biotechnology Instructor, at 704-669-4167.
