He is predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Jeanette H. Costner from Shelby; and his grandpar- ents. Donald leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife, Bobbie E. He was born November 14, 1929 in Bertie County, NC to the late James S. Assad, Sr. and Alice Keel Assad. Mr. Assad served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. James is preceded in death by his wife, Linda S. Assad of Collins, GA and his brother, Daniel W. Assad of Southern Pines. He is survived by a daugh- ter, La'Wana A. Abernathy (Preston) of Apopka, FL; sons, Rafi J. Assad (Deborah) of Flat Rock, NC and Karl Najib Assad (Debbie) of Blacksburg, SC; a sister, Margaret A. VIRGINIA SPARKS BYERS Virginia Sparks Byers, 95, of Shelby, passed away on April 4, 2021. She was born on April 29, 1925 in Union, SC to the late Joseph Sparks and Pearl Anthony Sparks. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Palmer Byers. She is survived by two sons, Ronnie Neil Byers of Shelby and Michael Kent Byers and wife Susan House Byers of Leland; and a grandson and two great- grandchildren. JAMES (JIM) DAVID O'BRIEN James (Jim) David O'Brien, 87, born to John and Myrtle Norman O'Brien passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. GERALD WRAY McDANIEL Gerald Wray McDaniel, 75, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on April 4, 2021. He was born in Cleveland County, NC, to the late John Dixon and Annie Dixon McDaniel and was preced- ed in death by his brothers, Bill, Glenn, Clyde, Naaman, and Charles McDaniel and sisters, Josephine Sellers, Sarah Stroupe, Helen Roberts, and Ruth Sanders. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Wyte McDaniel; sons: Jerry McDaniel and wife Julie of Grover, NC and Todd McDaniel and wife Mikael of Fort Mill, SC; five grandchil- dren; three great grandchil- Mr. Greene served our country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Padgett and a brother, Charles Greene.
