P o w e r w a s h - i n g , a l s o known as p r e s s u r e - w a s h i n g , utilizes a high-ve- locity water spray to remove dirt and resi- due from the exterior surfaces of a home. It is frequently used on vinyl siding, concrete and sometimes wood decks to treat mildew and other growth that accumulates over time. Powerwashing can be a great way to re- move grime without having to scrub by hand. But it requires a delicate touch to get it right. Sometimes it is best to leave the job to profession- als. But homeowners willing to give it a go can try powerwashing themselves, as vari- ous stores rent power washers. The home im- provement website ImproveNet says that, until very recently, pressure washers were almost exclusively commercial machines sold to professionals or rented to do-it-yourselfers. Lately manufactur- ers have targeted homeowners looking to buy with lightweight options. For those who see powerwashing as a routine venture, purchas- ing a unit may be worth the investment. It is important to exercise caution when operating a powerwashing machine. The high- velocity spray can tear through skin. It is key to get a feel for the washer, and try less pres- sure first to get a handle on the magnitude of the tool. Don safety gear prior to using a pressure washer. Gloves, eye protection and ear protec- tion can be handy. Most units will connect to a standard garden hose. Choose old clothing and expect to get wet. Never point a powerwasher hose at anyone and do not attempt to rinse feet or hands in the spray. The renovation resource The Family Handyman suggests starting with a wide-de- gree nozzle to test out the spray on the surface that needs to be cleaned. A 15- or 25-degree nozzle is usually the wand for general cleaning and paint stripping without damaging the sur- face of the home. Experiment with an optimal distance of the washer wand to get the desired cleaning effects without causing any damage. Work using a horizontal and slightly down- ward angle to avoid driving water up under the siding of a home. Avoid spraying any electric wires or com- ponents on the home. Also, try not to spray upward, and angle the spray away from doors, windows and vents. Some washers have reservoirs that will hold a detergent solution. Choose the right de- tergent for the job. Keep in mind that cleans- ers containing bleach can damage surrounding plants, so they may need to be covered while the washing takes place. Avoid the use of ladders when operating a powerwasher. The push-back from the wand can cause falls. Instead, opt for an extension wand to address the upper reaches of a home. Powerwashing a home is an effective way to remove stubborn grime and refresh the look of a home's exterior. C loset space is at a premium in many homes and apart- ments. Many older homes were not built to accommodate large wardrobes, while rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage. Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls. Bedroom and hallway clos- ets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but such spaces tend to only be avail- able in modern homes or cus- tom-built properties. It is not always practical or possible to undergo reno- vations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas. CLEAR OUT CLUTTER The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing that no longer fits or items that can be stored else- where should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organi- zations will even pick up donations at your convenience. UPGRADE HANGERS AND RODS Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more eas- ily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space. Consider dual closet rods if space will allow them. Hang the second rod below an area reserved for shorter clothing to achieve a two-tiered design. Grouping short items together also can free up valuable floor space. STACK TALLER Many closets are as tall as the ceilings of the rooms where they're located. However, the upper area may go unused because if it is not easy to reach. Install shelving above the closet rod with small swing-out style cabinet doors to offer access. In such areas, store seasonal items that you won't need to reach for each day. Keep a step stool close by for easy accessibility. In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space be- neath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet. CREATE STORAGE FOR SMALL ITEMS Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don't easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don't overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall in- side the closet or on the back of closet doors. When finishing closet makeovers, be sure to install lighting inside the closet so items are more visible. House powerwashing tips Create more closet space without major renovations
