JUNE 2013 Page 8A • FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY PREP PROFILE Heitzer gets control of his serve Arrowhead senior wins league title By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff TOWN OF MERTON – Kevin Heitzer always had power on the tennis court. As a freshman at Arrowhead High School, Heitzer could rifle a serve with a lot of zip to it – although there was a minor flaw. "When he came out, he had a big first serve, but it went in maybe 15 to 20 percent of the time," Arrowhead coach Jeremy Schlitt said. "His second serve, he got it in." Once the 6-foot-5 Heitzer was able to control the fast serve, his game took off. He played varsity doubles as a freshman and sophomore and was the Classic 8 Conference runner-up at No. 1 singles as a junior. This past offseason took Heitzer's game to another level, and he won the Classic 8 title and won two matches at last month's WIAA Division 1 state meet. "My offseason coach helped me learn the right (serving) technique," Heitzer said. "Once I get that first serve in, it makes things easier. I usually get an easy shot most of the time after the serve. "I have a good kick serve, too, so it doesn't matter to Mary Langenfeld/Special to The Freeman Kevin Heitzer helped Arrowhead qualify for the state team tennis tournament. me. People sometimes have more trouble with my kick serve because it's kind of a changeup." Heitzer's height has been beneficial throughout high school, and now that he's got his form down, it's an even bigger asset. "He's a big guy and pretty intimidating," Schlitt said. "He has a big wingspan, gets his serve going and really mixes it up with his serve and volley. "He's got all the angles down for that serve." Heitzer got to the state individual tournament as a doubles competitor his sophomore year, and last year he won his first singles match at state before losing to eventual runnerup Alex Jesse of Homestead in the second round. "Singles is definitely different. I felt I got to prove myself more," Heitzer said. "You only have yourself and have to rely on your own skills." Heitzer beat Mukwonago senior Jake Diesler to win this year's Classic 8 title after Diesler won last year's title match. It was a boost for Heitzer entering the state series. "Last year, I was definitely disappointed in myself," Heitzer said. "(Winning the Classic 8) got me really fired up." "He gave me his goal sheet at the start of the year, and he mentioned he wanted to beat Diesler, wanted to beat (Kettle Moraine's) Chayce Roecker, who he lost to last year, and win a conference championship at No. 1 singles," Schlitt said. "He reached all those goals, and he also had on there to reach team state." Heitzer helped the Warhawks qualify for the state team meet in Madison. "He's a very intelligent person on and off the court," Schlitt said. "He's always prepared, he's a very smart player and he makes adjustments really well. "He's just a great kid to be around." Heitzer is going to the University of Wisconsin to study computer science, and will not compete for the Badgers. But UW does have a strong club team that Heitzer likely will join. "I wanted to focus on academics," Heitzer said. "Their club team is really good, so I'm sure I'll get plenty of competition from it." Email: dmike@conleynet.com Get to know ... Defending track champion Dennis Prunty from Knowles took the runner-up spot over Casey Johnson from Stoughton. The victory however, did , not come without controversy . Jeff Holtz from Franksville and Johnson started from the front row and at the drop of the green raced side-by-side for the first nine laps. While the duo sorted out the front position, Brad Mueller from Random Lake, Conrad Morgan from Waukesha and Lowell Bennett from Neenah lined up nose to tail behind the leaders. Mueller got Holtz hung out in the outside lane, advancing to the second spot while Braun had quickly advanced to the fourth position. On lap 22, Braun drove to the outside of Holtz to take third and under Mueller on lap 31 for second, setting his sights on Johnson. At the halfway mark, Braun, had worked past Johnson for the top spot. On lap 50, Johnson, who was under the assault of Mueller, surrendered the second spot to the three-time Slinger champion. However, ahead of him Braun had opened up a half-straightaway lead. Morgan's spin in turn two, on lap 53, brought out the event's first caution, eliminating Braun's massive lead. Brad Mueller lined up on the outside of row one for the restart and got a tremendous jump on Braun. But Mueller's night quickly came to a halt after being deposited to the infield off of Braun's front bumper as the pair charged off of turn two. In the incident, Braun momentarily slowed allowing Johnson and Prunty to get by . Braun gathered his momentum and began to reel in the leaders. With 15 laps to go, Braun went under Prunty and went after Johnson, who was making his first super late model feature start at Slinger Speedway With only four laps . to go, Braun made contact with Johnson, sending the leader up the hill.
