JUNE 2013 FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY • Page 7A WIAA STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEET Sharrock repeats as hurdles champ Arrowhead golfers win Kaz meet By Tom Badger Freeman Correspondent Nicholas Dettmann/Conley News Service Pewaukee's T.J.Watt prepares to let loose with the discus. Kettle Moraine's Alex Sharrock Lasers senior proves 2012 title no fluke By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff LA CROSSE – Alex Sharrock wanted to prove himself. It might seem weird for a state champion to prove himself, but that's exactly how the Kettle Moraine High School senior approached the WIAA Division 1 state track and field meet. "Going into your senior year after winning a state championship as a junior, there's a big target on your back," he said. "Every single hurdler is looking to you to prove something." Sharrock did just that, winning his second straight 300-meter hurdle title by running the race in 37.69 seconds at Veterans Memorial Stadium. "It's such an awesome experience being able to say my junior year wasn't a fluke," said Sharrock, who was also fourth in the 110 high hurdles and helped the Lasers' 4x400 relay to fifth of your game if you want to get that state championship back again. I was on the top of my game." Sharrock, who says the 300 is his favorite hurdle race, has a simple strategy . "Some people go in and count their steps, and some Nicholas Dettmann/Conley News Service go in there and say where they want to be at a certain celebrates after winning the state Division 1 300 hurdles race. point," he said. "I just go as fast as I can and pray that I can get over that line first." Pewaukee senior T.J. Watt proved his family may be amongt the state's all-time best by winning the Division 2 shot put at 60 feet, 1/2 inch. Watt is the last of his brothers to win a state shot put title, as oldest brother J.J. won the event as a senior, as did middle brother Derek. Their father, John, was also a state champion in the shot put. But T.J. holds some bragging rights, as he holds the Pewaukee record with his toss of 60-2 at the sectional level. "I wanted 62 (Saturday), but I'm happy with the title," Watt said. "They're all behind me, but I do have that school record, so I'm happy with that." Watt was sixth in the discus at 152-11. "It was not as good as I would've hoped," Watt said. "I wanted to go 160, and I was throwing 160s in warmups. Derek was in La Crosse for the state meet, while J.J. was in Houston training with the Nicholas Dettmann/Conley News Service Texans. University Lake junior Isabel Seidel had a strategy in mind for the 1,600, and a new scoreboard at Veterans Memorial Stadium may have hindered her late move. Seidel was reeling in the leader of the Division 3 race, but a new scoreboard at the stadium is visible to runners as they approach the finish line. Spring Valley senior Breanna Colbenson admitted she saw Seidel coming on strong in the scoreboard and put on a final kick to win the race in 5:09.12. Seidel was second in 5:09.81. "I felt like I had it in me, but Breanna ran a great race," Seidel said. "I'm still happy with how I finished." Seidel ran the 3,200 second in 11:02.65. "Coming into this year, I didn't expect doing as well as I ended up doing," she said. "After my first indoor race my coach asked if I'd like to try running the triple (800, 1,600 and 3,200). I prepared myself, and it took a lot to get myself into it. "It worked out well. I never thought I'd do that last year, and now here I am." Seidel finished third in the 800 at 2:20.98, surviving a slight stumble after the first lap. "Luckily I recovered from , it, but I saw it flash before my eyes thinking, 'I cannot fall,'" she said. "I was actually worried about the start being blocked up because our sectional was very very intense. , This was much better." Email: dmike@conleynet.com NEW BERLIN – Any golfer able to perform under the miserable conditions at New Berlin Hills deserved an A. By early afternoon, most of the A's went to the Arrowhead High School boys golf team. Led by junior Kyle Tanriverdi's 78, the Warhawks won the Kaz Invitational with a team score of 324 – three strokes better than runner-up Marquette and six better than Brookfield East and Catholic Memorial, which tied for third. New Berlin Eisenhower finished with 335 to round out the top five. Memorial junior Dylan Allen and Eisenhower sophomore Nate Erickson each carded 77. Allen won the tiebreaker and medalist honor with a 37 on the back nine compared to Erickson's 38. The high grades for Arrowhead came as a pleasant surprise to coach Greg Budzien. "The weather conditions were atrocious in the middle of the round when that front came through," Budzien said. "I'm very proud of the guys for being mudders. It was so windy, so cold and so wet." Arrowhead senior Connor Thiel finished with an 81, while junior Tyler Peterson and senior Spencer Jepsen came in with 82 and 83, respectively. All four Warhawks broke 40 on one of the 9's. "There were a lot of good golfers out there who weren't playing well because of the conditions," Budzien said. "You just have to play your best worst game." Tanriverdi also was surprised by his score. "It didn't even think 78 would be top 10 today," Tanriverdi said. "It was an easy course from a look at the scorecard, but it definitely didn't play like that. The biggest challenge was just hitting the greens – and then trying to get up and down when you did miss the green. I was just making pars by making the 5-footers." 232713001 Lake Country is your home... READ ALL ABOUT IT!
