JUNE 2013 FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY • Page 3A ProHealth Care plans new cancer center in City of Pewaukee CITY OF PEWAUKEE – ProHealth Care has announced plans for a new outpatient cancer facility in the City of Pewaukee, designed to meet the various treatments and needs of patients – all under one roof. ProHealth Care recently acquired a 14-acre site along Pewaukee Road, just north of Interstate 94 and south of Riverwood Drive, where it plans to build the new cancer center. "It will be patient-centered," said Susan Edwards, ProHealth Care's CEO. "That will set our program, I think, apart from others, as well as amazing physicians. "We're just really excited to do something to improve the care of the patients in this community," she added. With the new outpatient center, ProHealth will offer testing, diagnostic scans, evaluations, support groups, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and more, Edwards said. The facility will have a full complement of advanced diagnostic imaging technology and a CyberKnife, a robotic radiosurgery system that delivers beams of radiation to tumors and does not involve cutting. The facility will use a multi-disciplinary approach, in which specialists will meet as a group to evaluate the patient and carefully coordinate a treatment plan. An oncology nurse navigator will be assigned to each patient to help take him or her through the treatment plan and center, Edwards said. The nurse navigator's job is "to coordinate everything, to provide support and education to the patients," she said. "The whole point is trying to make the experience for the cancer patient as smooth and seamless as possible." Cannon Design – an architectural, engineering and interior design firm that has extensive experience design- ing cancer centers – was tapped to create the approximately 116,000-squarefoot facility . The design of the new facility will make maximum use of daylight and capitalize on the site's natural features, including a pond and prairie area, according to a ProHealth press release. Construction and equipment costs are expected to reach about $70 million, the release said. ProHealth will continue operating cancer centers at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and the D.N. Greenwald Center in Mukwonago. But outpatient cancer services currently available at Waukesha Memorial Hospital will relocate to the new City of Pewaukee center. ProHealth hopes to break ground this fall and open the new center in January 2015. – Freeman Staff Outdoor retailer expands to Delafield Clear Water Outdoor sells clothing, gear, more No slackers PEWAUKEE – Austin Caira of Pewaukee walks on a slack line stretched between two trees along the lakefront recently. Sensenbrenner, Kind re-introduce Medal of Honor legislation for Cushing WASHINGTON, D.C. – The recurring fight to obtain a posthumous Medal of Honor for Civil War hero and Delafield native Alonzo Cushing has begun again. U.S. Reps. Ron Kind and Jim Sensenbrenner have reintroduced legislation to waive the time requirement for awarding the medal to Cushing, who died heroically during the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. "Lt. Cushing was a courageous leader who gave his life to protect our sovereign nation," said Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls. "This brave soldier from Wisconsin should be awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic service." Cushing, 22, led a Union artillery battery against a Confederate assault – Pickett's Charge – at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Despite suffering wounds to his shoulder, abdomen and groin, Cushing continued directing his battery's fire at Cemetery Ridge. He was killed after a bullet struck him in the head. Soon after, Union reinforcements forced the Confederates to retreat. Cushing July 1 through 3 marks the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. "It's an honor to fight for the memory of Lt. Cushing and help award him the medal he deserves," Kind, DLa Crosse, said in a press release. No Medals of Honor were awarded posthumously during the Civil War. Recommendations for the Medal of Honor must be formally made within two years of the heroic action and awarded within three years. After prompting from local historians in Delafield, thenSen. Russ Feingold nominated Cushing for the medal in 2003. During the next seven years, the Departments of Defense and the Army reviewed and approved the application. Under Sensenbrenner's and Kind's legislation, backed by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the time requirement can be waived with congressional approval and the president's signature. The pro-Cushing legislation had been included in a group of amendments for both the House's and U.S. Senate's versions of the National Defense Authorization Act in December 2012. Although the House approved the legislation, Sen. James Webb, D-Virginia, cast the lone Senate vote against it. A highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, Webb argued essentially that Cushing's actions took place too long ago to accurately determine whether they were worthy of the Medal of Honor. Webb retired from the Senate in January . She wanted to try different ways of presenting the stores and merchandise, but she was bound by the rules of those businesses. She became unhappy working for others who were not open to new and fresh ideas, she said. "Ultimately, my husband dared me to write a business plan," Schuster said. Within about three months of writing the plan, the couple opened the Lake Geneva store on May 1, 2005. Schuster's husband, Dave Schuster, is chief financial officer and they have two children. Schuster said she heard people say they were surprised how pretty, comfortable and appealing the store is and how easy it is to shop there. She thought she'd like to one day set up a store again, and now she has. "I've worked for other people who worked too fast and fell hard," she said. "We're really careful. "We've been working on this expansion plan for a long time," Schuster said. "We're praying with all of our might that everything will be successful." Clear Water Outdoor is opening a third store in Williams Bay, she said. Schuster hopes to expand one day to downtown Milwaukee, Madison and the North Shore in Chicago. The Delafield store will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. "We have a lot of fun. We have great staff," Schuster said. Eight years later, Clear Water Outdoor has expanded with a second store now open in Delafield. Clear Water Outdoor opened a store at 803 Genesee St. last month. "We've actually been looking at Delafield for several years," said Sarah Schuster, chief operating officer of Clear Water Outdoor. Delafield has a lot of similarities with Lake Geneva, Schuster's hometown and where the flagship store is based, and a number of customers were coming from Delafield, she said. The two stores are similar in size, too – about 3,000 square feet. "We like the idea how it's right in the middle with all the trail networks and all the lakes around there," Schuster said. "It's got a nice active community, it seems." The Delafield store sells footwear and clothing, kids' toys and games, as well as gear like backpacks and water bottles, Schuster said. Clear Water Outdoor is not a typical outdoors store because it also sells products that aren't often found at a Wisconsin store, she added. While the Lake Geneva store offers classes, customers can schedule paddle instruction, guided tours and private paddle events through the Delafield store. Schuster worked as an outdoor retailer while working on her business degree at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. She learned the sales and business side, as well as managed other stores.
