The FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE Lake Country THIS MONTH INSIDE JUNE 2013 Practice fire safety at home this summer By Shannon Venegas Special to The Freeman 7A PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID WAUKESHA, WI PERMIT NO. 3 Sharrock repeats as hurdles champ The temperature is heating up, along with the grills and bonfires. While having a fun summer is important, so is having a safe one. Lake Country Fire and Rescue Chief Jack Edwards and firefighter and paramedic Brad Bowen shared tips on fire safety for common summer activities. Hello, Lake Country! Out on the grill Summer is sizzlin' and so are the grills! Just make sure to keep that sizzling under control. Edwards said that while gas grills are generally not a fire hazard, charcoal grills can present a safety hazard if not monitored. Do not to leave charcoal grills on the deck after the cooking is done as ashes left on the tray can blow away . Also, be sure to shut all vents on the grill. Do not light charcoal close to the home. Monitor the grill when in use, Bowen said. Charcoal can burn a hole in your deck and cause deck and house fires. People in multifamily housing should be aware of local ordinances and facility rules, Bowen said. Some complexes have rules against propane grills above the first floor since they require a propane tank. Be careful this summer when setting off fireworks. According to Bowen and Edwards, the most important thing to remember when using fireworks is to use your common sense. Make sure young children are fully supervised and far from the launch area. Bowen cautions against showing young teenagers how to light fireworks. They may think they are capable of using them when unsupervised. Use caution when letting small children use sparklers, Edwards said. They may burn their hands or set fire to something. Tiki tiki Tiki torches bring a bit of the island shore to your backyard. But don't bring a safety hazard along as well. Edwards said because they are an open flame, it is just like having a large candle lit in your backyard. Keep them in moist grassy areas, far from woods and dry spots. Make sure they are properly staked. Do not let children shake them or hang on them as they are filled with oil. Monitor when lit. Around the bonfire Warm weather means having bonfires and burning yard waste. But don't get too carried away with the size of the fire. Be aware of local ordinances.Generally in the Lake Country area, fires should be no more than 4 feet wide by 3 feet high.
