S baseball scores play-off berth Varsity ports Page 6 May 17, 2013 Veronica Smith Staff Writer After a long season of working hard and improving what they need to improve, the Red Bluff Varsity baseball team has made it all the way to the final game of sections and they are determined to walk away with a win. With the team's record being 18-13 the team would agree that they have had their good and their bad moments when it came to the beginning of the season but they have been able to work through it to get to playoffs. "We have been preparing ourselves all year for this exciting occasion," Senior Evan Sinclair explained. With Red Bluff staring sections as the seventh seed they were able to beat the 3rd Egan Meagher/BLUFFER The varsity Spartans baseball team works on their hitting and running in preparation for their eventual win over Pleasant Valley in play-offs seed Chico with the score being 5-0, then the next week they were able to beat the 2nd seed P.V. going into very intense extra innings with the ending score being 6-5 after pulling through. "I thought it was my last up to bat, I didn't want it to end right here," Senior Colin Igarta says. With the majority of the team being seniors they had said that the differences from last year and this year is better pitching and a lot better of chemistry Taylor Phillip, freshman. The season so far has gone very well for the team. They have gone 21-9 and in league went 2-1. Isaksen said, "I'm proud of winning league and beating Shasta because I have friends on their team." The team respects head coach Randy Watt as a teacher and motivator. "He is strict, but not too strict, is fun to be around, and he pushes us," said Isaksen. A good head coach is the perfect glue to hold together a team. This, along with team friendship and communication, which this softball team definitely has, will push them didn't know what to expect, but he has helped us become better fielders," said shortstop, Molly individuals and a team. Practice is an important part of any team exercise, and the JV softball team enjoys practice and gets a lot of good training out of it. "If we have an intense practice, everybody is more focused in our next game," said Murphy. Their practices deal with fielding and doing a lot of warm ups. Though the team thinks between every single player. This is Coach Sanders' first year of coaching the varsity team he is glad he was able to work with these kids, "watching the kids come together and playing their best is my favorite part of this season." The playoffs game is against Shasta but the boys are confident in their team to win and are excited to beat Shasta! "I think if we play as good as we can then we have a good chance of winning," Coach Sanders said. "After Saturday's game, im going to have a ring with all my bros," Senior Colin Igarta said. The game with Red Bluff against Shasta is going to be held at the Shasta College, Saturday May 18, 2013 at 4 p.m. JV softball brings their season to a close with a final league championship victory Owen Ritter Staff Writer The Red Bluff High School JV Softball team has reached the end of their season and is proud of their league victory. The teams' pitcher, Hannah Isaksen, freshman, is proud of "winning league, and beating Pleasant Valley." The players all get along and have fun playing softball. They have grown as a team and as friends. "One accomplishment is all of us being able to have fun while playing," said first basewoman Boys Golf team ends season with fourth place in the league Bailey Patchen Staff Writer Red Bluff High Schools boy's golf team finished off the 2012-2013 season on Monday. The team made it to divisions, sections and also placed fourth in league. "Being on the golf team is a great experience to be a part of," said Dylan Grossman, sophomore, whose average score at the end of the season was 79. The team has got a lot closer since the beginning of the season and have worked hard at improving on their game. "From freshman year to my senior year, I have more distance when driving and my short game has gotten better," said Peter Mitzel, senior. "I've seen a lot of improvement. My scores have lower a lot," said Grossman. Not only has the team improved in specific areas of their game, they have also taken on new rituals that they feel has made them play better. "I've noticed that if I eat a poppy seed muffin before each match, I'm more focused," said Mitzel. With the team's improvements, some of them have also reached their goals for the season. "My goal for this year was to play well in league and to make it to Nor Cals," said Mitzel. Mitzel reached his goal and will be participating in Nor Cals after he scored a 75 at Monday's match, which qualified him to participate. Mitzel said he has been practicing for Nor Cals on Monday by practicing as much as he can after school. "Practice is long, we do a lot of running to improve speed, and drills that help us mentally know what to do," said Isaksen. The team has accomplished a lot during this season and is ecstatic for championships. All the players seem confident that they will win, or at least do their best. With improved fielding and having fun while playing it sounds like it is in the bag for the JV softball team.
