Arts and Entertainment Page 5 Tymber Bealer Staff Writer Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" was no flop. It was a sincere, quality movie. The set that the movie took place on was almost magical, as if it was a time machine taking you back to the glamorous 1920's. It's a great novel that was shown throughout the movie with respectfulness. If you've seen any of Lurhmann's movies like, "Strictly Ballroom," "Romeo + Juliet" or "Moulin Rouge" trailers, you would know that you're in for an exceptional movie."The Great Gatsby" is no exception as it follows the life of Nick Carraway played as Tobey Maguire throughout the movie. Mr. Carraway leaves the Midwest to come to New York City in the spring of 1922. This was an era filled with of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Mr. Carraway lands next door to a mysterious party-giving millionaire named Jay Gatsby played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Across the bay from his cousin named Daisy who is played by Carey Mulligan. It is obvious that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the greatly wealthy. He's always getting polled in by their illusions, loves, and deceits. As Mr. Carraway pens a tale of impossible love and has many other tragedies in his life going on he holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles. When I first heard about the movie "The Great Gatsby" there were previews for it everywhere and everyone seemed to talking about it. In effect of this, coming into this movie I had greatly high expectations. Even though I have never read the book before, all the things I kept hearing from my friends and classmates about the book made me become more and more excited for the movie to come out, so I could watch it. This movie will keep you interested all the way through it and will keep you always interested in the next thing coming. May 17, 2013 The Laurel Shoop Editor-in-Chief By now, after the recent media explosion drawing everyone's attention to the new The Great Gatsby movie, I assume most people already know the story of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, and Daisy and Tom Buchanan. However, it is important not to forget what started it all- the classic American novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The overall, seemingly simple plotline of this novel has many in-depth conflicts and subplots that contribute to the reasons why this novel is taught in schools all over the nation. The Great G rea t G tsb a y C an the m vie co o mp are to the cla ssi n ve ? c o l Gatsby has an abundance of dissimilar themes, including the American Dream, adultery, death, hope, and love triangles; all of which take place in an alluring time period full of excitement and prosperity- The Roaring Twenties. Most students agree that The Great Gatsby is one of their favorite novels among the others taught in school because it manages to capture readers' attentions with captivating characters, a tragic, unpredictable plotline, and a relatively simple writing style. Even though the novel does not include a lot of details about Gatsby and Daisy's secret affair, the reader is still drawn to the universal aspect of "forbidden love." In addition, some of the themes portrayed in this novel are easily relatable to people of all ages. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most high schooler's cannot relate to Macbeth, or The Crucible; but when it comes to The Great Gatsby, it is an appealing read to all students who cannot stand to sit through another book written centuries ago. I know it is very tempting to leave this book on your desk to collect dust and take a quick trip to the local movie theaters; but if you haven't read it yet, it is truly rewarding to read this powerful novel before attending the movie (which, I admit, is also amazing). Besides, since you have probably seen the commercials anyway, you can now imagine Gatsby (who, while I was reading the novel, I imagined being old for some reason) as being none other than Leonardo Dicaprio. Aleczander Sims Staff Writer After having what feels like a drought of full f ledge games, Soul Sacrifice is a hopeful game for the Ps Vita. Developed by JapanStudio and the man behind Megaman, Dead Rising and Onimusha, Keiji Inafune. Soul Sacrifice is an action-heavy roleplaying game that really showcases combat. With up to four people playing on one screen against an army of monsters in multiplayer. The combat is so smooth and responsive that when you are fighting a colossal dragon, you can't help but get caught up in the epic moment. Right from the start the world is in utter chaos, ruled by an evil sorcerer named Magusar. You are being held captive in a demonic jail cell until you witness your neighbor in the cell across from you attempt a jail break. Magusar notices and quickly eliminates the prisoner with a nasty explosion leaving nothing but a f lesh looking leather bound book. Over the course of the night you hear a beckoning call and rustling about your cell. Underneath a pile of rubble and debris you find the talking book named Librom. The book informs you that within it is the knowledge and experiences of a sorcerer who was once considered Magusar's friend and knew the secret to his demise and your escape. Site of the Issue www.redlettermedia.com Red Letter Media is a site about guys who review movies. It may sound boring, but these guys are some of the funniest on the internet. The site releases a new movie about once a week and have hundreds of hilarious reviews of old and new movies. Their sense of humor is dark and unique; it never ceases to make me laugh. When you open the book you get transported into its pages and are forced to live through the sorcerer's Life, day by day though some of the pages are smudged. On these smudged pages you can change how the sorcerer's life happened, these pages act as your customization menus. You can change your appearance, spells, and ultimate attacks making your own sorcerer. Throughout the pages you are put into situations where you have to make a decision the sorcerer once made, whether or not to save or sacrifice a fallen soul. When you come to these cross roads you have to choose to purify a soul or sacrifice it to increase your own power. But whatever choice you make has a consequence. This concept was meant to symbolize the sacrifices we make in our daily life that we don't even notice. Like to do your job you have to sacrifice your time, or to eat you have to sacrifice your money and even more money for better food. You can give up your personal belongings, parts of your body or even your life itself to gain more power. As you progress through the sorcere's life you begin to inherate his abilities in the real world. You must read the book to the end to learn the secret behind Magusar's power and to become powerful enough to save the world from Magusar's horrible reign. It is fair to say that Soul Sacrifice has a lot going for it but the game Is not going to make you want to drop everything and buy the closest Ps Vita.
