Top lawyer FDA is warning con- sumers and health care professionals about cer- tain hand sanitizer prod- ucts, including those manufactured by Har- monic Nature S de RL de MI in Mexico, that are labeled to contain etha- nol or isopropyl alcohol but have tested posi- tive for 1-propanol con- tamination. 1-propanol, not to be confused with 2-propanol/isopropanol/ isopropyl alcohol, is not an acceptable ingredi- ent for hand sanitizer products marketed in the United States and can be toxic and life-threat- ening when ingested. The agency urges consumers not to use these 1-propanol-con- taminated products and has expanded its do- not-use list of hand sani- tizers at www.fda.gov/ unsafehandsanitizers to include hand sanitizers that are or may be con- taminated with 1-propa- nol, in addition to other hand sanitizers the agency is urging con- sumers not to use. Young children who accidentally ingest these products and adoles- cents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) sub- stitute are most at risk. Ingesting 1-propanol can cause central nervous system (CNS) depres- sion, which can result in death. Symptoms of 1-propanol exposure can include confusion, decreased conscious- ness, and slowed pulse and breathing. Animal studies indi- cate that the central ner- vous system depressant effects of 1-propanol are 2 to 4 times as potent as alcohol (ethanol). Con- sumers who have been exposed to hand sani- tizer containing 1-propa- nol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate care for treat- ment of toxic effects of 1-propanol poisoning. Skin or eye exposure to 1-propanol can result in irritation, and rare cases of allergic skin reactions have been reported. Consumers who have products on the list of hand sanitizers with potential methanol or 1-propanol contamina- tion should immediately stop using the product and dispose of it, ideally in a hazardous waste container. Do not pour these products down the drain or flush them. Contact your local waste management and recy- cling center for more in- formation on hazardous waste disposal. The agency contin- ues to add certain hand sanitizers to the import alert to stop these prod- ucts from legally enter- ing the U.S. market and has issued warning let- ters to companies that violate federal law. FDA reminds con- sumers to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bath- room; before eating; and after coughing, sneez- ing, or blowing one's nose. If soap and water are not readily available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend con- sumers use an alcohol- based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent ethanol (also referred to as ethyl alco- hol). FDA encourages health care profession- als, consumers and pa- tients to report adverse events or quality prob- lems experienced with the use of hand sanitiz- ers to FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Report- ing program (please provide the agency with as much information as possible to identify the product): For an up-to-date list of hand sanitizers not to use, visit: https://www. f d a . g o v / d r u g s / d r u g - safety-and-availability/ fda-updates-hand-san- i t i z e r s - c o n s u m e r s - should-not-use and scroll to the bottom of the page.
