Poplar Street, Petersburg SPORTS BRIEFS PCMS cross country training starts July 6 First year Pike Central Middle School cross country coach Cain Parker reports that those interested in run- ning cross country in grades four through eight will be having summer runs starting Monday, July 6. Those in- terested should meet at 5:30 p.m. at Prides Creek Park at the new shelter house on that day and bring their own water. The new shelter house is located to the left as you enter the park. The runs will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the first two weeks, beginning July 6 and ending July 17. The rest of the summer will be TBA. Report turkey hens and young to DNR starting July 1 Volunteers can help DNR learn more about Indiana's wild turkey populations by reporting turkey broods from July 1 through Aug. 31. Each summer, wildlife biologists and volunteers con- duct brood surveys, counting the number of young wild turkeys observed with turkey hens to estimate how many young turkeys live through the summer. Summer brood survival is one of the primary factors influencing wild tur- key population trends in various regions of the state and informs wild turkey management. This year, DNR aims to collect 3,000 brood observa- tion reports across the state with a goal of at least 25 ob- servations per county. Biologists are especially interested in obtaining more observations in the southeastern por- tion of the state. "Some of the better turkey habitat in the state exists in southeastern Indiana," said Steve Backs, DNR's wild tur- key biologist. "Turkey populations appear to have declined in recent years. Above-normal precipitation in June to early July can reduce poult (young turkey) survival and overall population levels. Unfortunately, the low number of brood reports from the southeast prevents us from further ex- ploring the apparent population decline." Individuals interested in participating can register and re- port turkeys at on.IN.gov/turkeybrood. Instructions for the survey and an illustrative guide on how to report observations of wild turkey broods and hens is provided on the registra- tion site, as are the results of the previous summers' survey. Community deer hunting coordinator training offered Individuals interested in becoming qualified as Com- munity Hunting Access Program (CHAP) deer hunting coordinators are invited to attend this year's training ses- sion on Saturday, July 11. CHAP is designed to increase hunting opportunities for white-tailed deer in communities and help alleviate hu- man/deer conflicts. CHAP is described in detail at wild- life.IN.gov/9420.htm. The training will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the DNR Fish & Wildlife Bloomington Field Office. Coordinators may be hired by communities applying for CHAP to imple- ment safe deer hunting practices in various types of com- munities, parks, and terrains in accordance with the CHAP program. Training will cover topics including the biology of white-tailed deer, deer management options, and suc- cessful deer hunting in urban communities. The training will be contracted through White Buffa- lo, Inc. An online portion of training will be required prior to attending the in-person training session. Training-ses- sion participants should come ready to participate and take notes. An outdoor field trip portion of the session is planned, and participants should come dressed appropri- ately for the weather, ready to caravan to the field trip lo- cation with their own lunches. Lunch will not be provided. Registration is required for the event, and the deadline is Friday, June 26. Participation is limited to 20 people. However, he said accuracy was more im- portant than distance. "I find the fairways, working on ac- curacy rather than distance." Peyton is the 14-year-old son of Jason and Melanie Black- ard of Gibson County. Mela- nie is originally a Pike Coun- ty resident. Asked about earlier long courses, Peyton said, "At Roll- ing Hills, I had a 74 on the last day. There are a couple really long holes. For me, finding the fairway and accuracy works best." Right now, he is in the top five in the points standings.
